A correspondent who furnished as supe weeks ago with an account of the military developments in the neighbourhood of Narning (Kwangsi Province) continues the narrative in the letter printed below. Some twenty thousand Yunnanese troops were then slowly making their way down to Naring, to pass through on their way to Kwangtung.' their objective being Canton. in the first instance Nanning early in the year was in possession of two military adventurers-General Li Teung Jen and General Huang Haino Hsing-who had, been operating in the „province for some time previously and who, last year combined their forces with the object of driving "Marshal. La lung Ting out of the province and seizing the reins of power themselves. In this they were successful and immediately turned their attention to suppressing "the aspirations of General Shen Hung Ying," who, having been' appointed, Tuli of the province, by the late De Sun Yat Sen, was anxious to take up the position For the purpose of suppressing him Generalks Lå and Huang withdrew the majority of their forces from Nauding to Kweiping. aud Wucho“, from which places expeditions were sent out which inflict- ed a series of defeats on General Shen. While these "operations were in progress, however, news came that large farees, of Yannnese were approaching Nanning. According to muouncements made by a Com- wander of one of these forces, General Li had grantes them permis- sion to pass through the province, on their way to Canton. On hearing of the approach of these troops General Huang paid a fving visit to Nanhing from Kweiping, and eight days later, when he departed, he took all his troops with him. The whole of the officers of the Govern anent, civil and military, also bolted for Kwriping, taking with them as much of the official records and property as they ewuld stow away on the only hunch in port, which they promptly combändecred: Thus, when the first Yunnanese force arrived in Nanning they found the city had been left without a vestige of Government. but they announced that they were only passing through to Canton and had no intention whatever of interfering with the civil government's functions, When our correspondent last wrote at the end of February, the position was that some 10,000 'Yugaanesë troops were occupying Nanding, another 10,000 were slowly moving down from the west. while another 15,000. were enter. ing the proviner from the north.. Our correspondent described the troops that had reached Xanning usa fine, well-set-up body of men, well drilled and kept under the strictest discipline." They were not interfering with the civil administration in any way. Since then" Lieneral Huang has swooped down on the city with the object of driving these forces back into Ynanan. The letter below describes the ignominious failure of the enterprise:--

(FROM A CORRESPONDENT.]

that this body of troops were operating in alliance with Huang and were unaware of his retreat and ware mak ing their way towards the Oil Installs tions in order to open fire on the city

They quickly disap from that side, peared into the thick foliage and pre bably retired during the night as nothing could be seen of them the next morning. Huang's troops all fed towards the pagoda and at sunset could be seen, with glasses, still going!
