THE PIECE GOODS CRISIS.

OF COM- HONGKONG CHAMBER

MERCE AND CHINESE DEALERS.

In view of the very unsatisfactory state of the local piece goods market the Chinese Piece Goods Guild approached "the Hongkong Genera! Chamber of Com- merce with certain proposals for meeting the situation, including an extension of the period of delivery from four to six months that interest charges in respect of goods which arrived in 1924 should be waived, and that importers should not pross the dealers unduly to take de livery.

The reply of the Chamber states that the Guild's of the 20th April has had the very sympathetic consideration of the Committe, and the Chamber is most anxious to do whatever lica in its power. intereste of all to promote the best engagal in this most important trade.

The letter continues:

"That there has beer and still exists a general trade depression and a certain stringeney in the modey market, also that there was some overbuying of woollens and springa fancies in anticipa tion of better trade during 1921-25, i mmitted. but in the opinion of the Com mitte the position is by no means uni. precedented in the history of, the Colony, nor are stocks so heavy as to be up- manageable.

With regard to the distress caused by the deplorable political situation in China coupled with robbery, squeeze, illegal military taxation and the en forced circulation of depreciated curren cies, which are largely responsible for the present stagnation, my Committee are in the utmost sympathy with all Chinese Merchants."

A good old English Custom

Keeping the port travelling round the table is an old custom still maintained by a few English clubs like Kensitas Cigarettes, sir, always passing round good company.

The soft, mellow-smoking qualities of Kensitas Cigarettes make you want to keep on enjoying them, and the last smoke is as good as the first, because all Kensitas are. "as good as really good cigarettes can be.”
