THE GOLD STANDARD.

MANSION HOUSE MEETING.

Earl Bauchamp presided "receatly at a meeting of the Sound Currency Associa tion, which was held by permission of the Lord Mayor at the Mansion House. There was a large attendance,

Mr. D. M. Mason moved the adopsion of the report. The association was hope. ful, he said, that an approach was being made towards the objects it aimed at the resumption of specie payments and the restoration of a free market in gold. He argued that wherever there had been groes inflation the increase in currency had unquestionably reflected on exchange, ahil until currency was brought back to the real needs of the country we were not likely to return to parity. They believed that if the Government made a decina tion that within six months they would restore specie payments in this country and a free market in gold they would Fond to bring about conditions that would enable us to maintais the parity of ex- change. They desires to ser restored the mechanism of exchange, which was the Isasis of our trade, and that could caly be done by the restoration of the sound- ness of our currency, We had too much paper currency in the country to-day.. and until there was contraction the goal would never be achieved. A free market in gold would have an influence on our Dominions and others, as it was the key to the revival of trade, which everybody desired.

Sir Drummond Fraser, who seconded, thought that the depreciation of the last few years was due to the reduction in the world's volume of trade. Our mobilised gold reserve in the Bank of England and

currency note account of £15,000,000 was SOCIETY OF ST. GEORGE," an automatic check on fnctuations in

the normal exchange value of the pound sterling in connection with international trade.

European countries had added

HONGKONG.

£200.000.000 to their gold stock since. 14. ST. GEORGE'S DAY.

One right. he thought, leave the manage ment of these gold reserves to the Bank of England. and is co-operation with other Crutral Europe banks, with fall confidence that the exchange values of the currencies linked to the gold standard would be maintained. The return to the gold standard did not mean that £1 and 109 notes for pocket or till purposes We would be exchanged for gold ecing. did not need gold coins. What was re- quired was the convertibility of the note into gold bullion. The removal of the anharge on gold would reatore confidence and induce other countries, to follow our example to revalue their currencies. and stabilise them on a gold basis.

The report was approved. Mr. Pownall mored, and Mr. W. J. Cook seconded the following resolution. which was also carried.

"That the meeting desires the exe cutive committee to appoint a deputa tion to interview the Chancellor of the Exechequer at the earlest possible opportunity in order to obtain from him

a declaration as to the date when specie payments will be resumed and free market in gold restored in this country.”

ARTIFICIAL SILK,

At the present time the demand is still keen both here and in America," said Mr. Samuel Courtauld at a recent moeling of Courtauld's, Limited, the great artificial silk company, whose net profit for 1924 was £3,880,745. Ho s&w no imminent probability, he said, of con- sumption falling behind production, although it was impossible to tell what, the distant future had in store.

A good old English Custom

Keeping the port travelling round the table is an old custom still maintained by a few English clubs-like Kensitas Cigarettes, sir, always passing round good company.

The soft, mellow-smoking qualities of Kensitas Cigarettes make you want to keep on enjoying them, and the last smoke is as good as the first, because all Kensitas, are "as good as really good cigarettes can be."
