COMPANY MEETING.

LAOU KUNG NOW, COTTON CO.

The annual general meeting of the Laow Kung How Cotton Spinning and Weaving Company was held at Shanghai on March 18th. Sir Edward Pearce presided.

In the course of his speech the Chair- man said: The cotton spinning industry during the last year has been one of great disappointment, and it is with great regret that your Board have such a poor report to lay before you today. The first six months of the year due to the high. price of cotton and the very unsatisfactory rates obtained for your products, caused your Board to view out losses covering that period with grava "concern, your Directors being placed in such that they had to take into most careful position consideration the advisability of continu ing work at a loss or to close down the works until better times. The question of expenses to be incurred through clos- ing down a gone into. The decision. eventually arrived at, view of our heavy overdraft with our more especially in bankers, was that we sheuki lose less By oasing work altogether rather than to increase our fast accumulating stocks.. Your mill, therefore, was cloned down on July 1st, and continued so far. the follow- ing four and a half months; during this peried, as you are all aware, hostilities broke out in our immediate neighbour- hoed, causing an almost complete cessa- tion of all business.

The result of the year's working, as shown in the sccounts, is a loss of is. 279,286.5%, to which has to be added the debit standing at profit and loss account at the end of 1993 of Th.. 88,056.57, show- ing an amount standing at the debit of this account at the end of 1924 of Tis. 583,543.24, and I much regret to say with no reserves to meet this figure. Owing to our lack of capital, we have had to pay our tankers no less than Tls. 71,719.70 for interest on our current account during year, practically speaking 9 per cent. on our capital. In these regrettable eir- cumstances your Board are unable to de preciate either your buildings or plant, All your available reserves having been. already utlized to meet previous years' loages.

RUBBER POSSIBILITIES IN CHINA,

Mr. Knox, the Rubber Propagandist, who went to China recently in connection with the FM.S. Propaganda scheme, stated on his return to Kuala Lumpur that he is convinced that a good market for rubber sad rubber goods could be developed in China. His impressions, however, as regards the immediate fa ture, are not very sanguine, but, as he says. "we cannot suddenly wave a magic wand and create a market. I think there are great possibilities in China if we can produce a sandal that can com pete with the existing form of straw sandals, which are made right through- out China, and are practically a home industry.'

Of course, air, tastes differ. Some people have judgment and others have none. But I've more respect, sit, for the man who smokes always an inferior cigarette than the man who amokes good ones one day and just anything the next. Yes, sir, I can say it posi- tively hurts to hand Kensitas to such smokers. Kensitas were not intended for such poor judges because Kensits are too good to waste.
