CANTON TRADE IN 1924. CONDITIONS BRIEFLY REVIEWED.

The following is a brief review of trade conditions in Canton in 1924:

JAD-Because of political disturbances in Kwangtung, jade dealers from Japan and Shanghai bought very little Canton jade during the greater part of the year. The neighbouring villages suffered from foods, famine and war, so the local de mand for jade was slack also, For short time, the local jade stores had to close their doors to avoid overhead charges. About 7,000 jade-runkers of various guilds were out of employment for a considerable" period" in 1024.

Hogs. The bog merchants bf Canton are divided into two groups; the eastern

group, which gets its supply from the Fegion of the East River and Huichow, and the western group, which obtains sup from the valleys of the West and plies Rivers North

Mainly due to military operations, Huishow hogs could not be transported to Canzon, and the trade from that source last year was reduced by fully one-third, as compared with the preceding year. The western group, had A rather prosperous year, but was affected by the merchants' strike at Sikwan

EYE-GLASSES-In Canton the eye-glass trade may be divided into two classes, the old-fashioned stores and the new. The latter class mainly relies upon in-

goods from

of their managers, the serratisu

old- fashioned shops have been decreasing in trade quite ateadily. The old-style glasses are clumsy and uncomfortable. Exp

They advertise liberally, make good par of window display, especially when they are in possession of new styles Some macagers are fairly well-trained apticians themselves, and in addition know how to exploit the

It is estimated that they did not collect more iban 50 per cent of the money owed them. Their Gnancial situation would have been hopeless had it not been that the trade with Hongkong was iuftable

The glass tenue has had a quie successful year, principally due to the enormous demand for bottles for medicine and toilet articies. Next to these, there was a heavy demand for electric light fixtures and drinking glasses. Since the opium monopoly was instituted by the Provincial Government, the demand for the glass cover of the opium lamp has phenomenally increased. The factory

of the Sincere. Ca., one of the

largest department stores at Canton, was EX-

manufacturing glaas goods for ita stores in Canton, Heng- kong and Shanghai. About 200 workers are regularly engaged for this work; and they were kept fully employed through- out 1924.

SHOE-MAKING Drather shoe manulae- turers are very numerous in Canton now, Most of them have only about 20 workers. They are on the whole rather well off. Bat the shoe stores which sell their pro- ducts have suffered big inant

however, did not take adequate steps to meet the abnormal demand, because DE the bigh price of imported paper and the rising cost of labour.

Datos.-Drug stores had rather a bad year, and do not see much hope of the revival of normal businem conditions in the immediate future. Two reasons ex-

plain this situation: first, many dealers bought heavily last spring, but political disturbances made it impossible for them readily to dispose of their goods to the retail merchants in other cities; secondly, foreign medicines are getting to be more and more popular.Chinese Economic
