CHILD LABOUR IN CHINA.

MANCHESTER CHAMBER OF -COMMERCE ACTION.

The China and Far East section of the Manchester Chamber of Coranerer have taken action on the question of child labour in China meratiy brought to the notice of Manchester businesi men by Misa Agatha Harrison who was a mem ber of the Commission on Child Labour appointed by the Shanghai Municipal | Council.

Mr. J. Rankine Finlayson, the chair. mas, explained that the next ratepayers' meeting of the Foreign Settlement in Shanghai would take place in April 16 was only after the ratepayers had agreed by a two-thirds majority to remedial action, that it was within the power of the Council to pass by-laws. Such by laws must, he unilerstood, receive thr unanimous consent of the seventeen or 30 Pogers which had extra-territorial Fight It was desirable that all the in- fluence possible from public opinion in Shanghai and from England should be usil to encourage the Council to reely the existing evils..

The China and Far East section exs cutive bare, therefor, arut the following cab to the British Chamber of Com mene, Shanghai:- Our China execu. tive, having carefully considered report, hope you will be able very strongly urge the Gonnell to adopt at an early date their Commission's recommenda tions"

A Fote appended to the official report of these proceedings reads:-"We are sure the Council of the Foreign Settle-| ment in Shanghai would welcome the mandate from the ratepayers to insist on better conditions, in milfs, though it should be realised that it may drive cer- tain industries out the settlement. We do not think this will prevent them set ting the same example of progress to the rest of China in this matter as hitherto they have done in nearly every question of decency and civilisation,

the London Chamber of Commerce on February 7th contains the announcement that members concerned" in trade with China and Japan are advised that Gles of the Chinese and Japanese Trade Marks Journal are available at the offices of the Chamber for their examination. There appear, the circular continues, to be numerous instances where marks and design similar to those of British manu- facturers have been registered in these countries and several where applications for registration have been lodged. Mem- bers likely to be interested should examine these fles in order to ascertain whether way of their marks or designs are being infringed. The Chinese Trade Marks Journal is in English langunge, whilst the Japanese Journal is printed in Japanese characters. Both contain illus trations of the marks submitted for regis- tration..

It is understood that opposition to trade marks applications have to be filed within two months, of their publication in the Chinese and Japanese Trade Marks Journals.
