FORTUNE IN THE TEA CUP.

COURT REVIEWS AN ANCIENT CUSTOM.

Fortune-telling by tra-leaves was dis- cussed in the Chancery Division, before Mr. Justice Russell, when he heard an action brought by William Graham Wes- man, a music-hall artist known as Leo Tree, and Louis Goldsmid, against Sidney McNamara, William C. Nicholson, John Carrard, and the Сар of Knowledge (Limited), for an injunction to restrain the infringement of plaintiffs' copyright. in an artistic design, in a fortune-telling trucup.

Defendants denied infringement,

Mr. Preston, K.C.. for the plaintiffs. said their design consisted of a scroll or norder inside the cup, on which appear. ed the words: "What does the cup say, T wonder. to-day 1"). In addition 32 playing cards were displayed inside the

cup.

Flaintiff's design, said counsel, bodied in a novel and original form two ideas which were not povel. The judge was no doubt aware of the practice of us ing tea leaves for purposes of divination. The judge: Is it a dark man com. ing from across the sea? Is that the sort of thing!

Mr. Preston: Fars. When you have drunk the tea you turn the cup up Tea leaves form a certain design, and from that you discover whether a dark man is coming from across the sens or whether you are going to inherit a larg: fortune. THOTOHT TRANSFERENCE,

in plaintiff's design, added Mr. Pres ton, playing cards were also used for the purposes of fortune telling, and their work consisted in a combination of these two ideas in the ornamentation of the teacup

Mr. Wegman was a well-known enter- tajner, who went in for thought trans- ference. divination, and the like. Hr

was in Australia for many years, and it was there that the idea of combining the tea-leaf practice with the playing card

practio first occurred to him

Mr. Preston added that Mr. Wesman had sold a half share in his design to 31. Goldsad for £300. He saw the de fendants cup exhibited for sale in a shop at Ludgat Hill and at Wembley:

For the defence, My McNamara stated that when in Sydney in January, 19 his mother showed him a Metross for

Mr. Menamara added that at that time he had a racehorse running at Sydney aud his mother cffered to tell bis fortune

HOW TO LIVE LONG.

CENTENARIAN'S VIEW OF THE MODERN GIRL.

That the modern WORLD, notwith standing her beauty treatment, is frys beautiful than her great-grandmother, is the opinion of Fulham's oldest resident, Mrs. James Holden, of 33, Atalanta. street, who celebrated recently her 103rd! birthday. Soap

my young days, those were the days when roses adorned the cheeks of every young woman.

Mrs. Hobden, who was born at Brigh ton on 1st. 1922, during the rige of

the rule of five sovereigns. She can recall quite distinctly the accession of Queen Victorin to the Throne and her marriage Juter to the Prince Consort.

"PRETTY CRINOLINE.

"I was considered to resemble the Queen very greatly in those days, she Bail. In fact, on one occasion, wheit I was out driving in Brighton with my mistress, whose maid I was, a well-known clubman who saw us laid a five pound wager that I retally was her Majesty ataying in the town incognito.

We wore crinolines then," she added, "and they were very pretty, too, with their frills and Hounces, much than the skinny skirts women nowadays.

Mrs. Hobden, who has lived in Fulam over 40 years, has been a widow 60 years. Her family is long-lived only on the paternal side, her father dying at the age of 85 and

MODERN JOAN OF ARC.

A young woman called at the French Foreign Office recently to see. M. Herriot; She was asked the reason of her visit. and she replied that she had a mission to fulfil and that, she had come all the way from the Lorraing village of Sesonges la Paris because the archangela had told her to do so. Her mission was to inspire M. Herriot's policy.

It was decided that the woman, Cecile Hamard, should be 'mentally examined. She was born at. Verdun, not far from Donremy, the home of Joan of Are.
