Sir Arthur Balfour, chairman of the Committee on Industry and Trade, which was appointed by Mfr. Ramsay Mac Donald last July, announced last month. that six sub-committees had been ap Foiated to investigate various phases of the industrial questions raised.

The task was proving to be more for- midable than any member of the com

mittee originally supposed The com mitter had heard the agricultural engine- ers, the steel rollers, the wool machinists. representatives of the shipping trade, and some others.

The committee was now about to start on some of the heavier trades. beginning with the cotton trade and going on to the iron, steel, and engineering trades.

Close examination was being made in regard to British ever-seas markets and the direction and low of trade generally

It might be 18 months or even twe years before it would be possible to pre- sent a full report with conclusions, but the committee hoped to publish a series of educative volumes.

The first of these was dae in April and would deal with the markets of the world, giving the clearest possible infor mation as to where trade should seek to recover lost markets or find new ones.

More than 30 meetings of sub-cum mitters have been held.a

say:

Our market is very uncertain for forward delivery Early shipment up to March 15th is rather impracticable owing to the lack of milling. The en- quiry from France is slackening on ac- count of the exchange fluctuations. few sales have been closed with Japan for April-May shipment Good enquiries have been received from Cuba, but with. out any result oa account of the lack of freight. The total amount of rice ex- ported from January let to February 15th, 1995. is 110,064,363 tons against 120,573,663 in 1094. We quote to-day white Saigon rice No. 2 sifeed, Japan quality:-Hongkong $5.84, 1ts. Qu., and yen 40 per "pisül, f.o.b. Saigon for March-April shipment.

During the last fortnight our market has beeh firm although only few transac tions are to be, reported on account of the fact that important contracts are be lifted just now, especially for Japan. Japanese buyers withdrew, however, after having bought in all about 40,000 tona owing to prices for Japan domestic rice having fallen, which nullified the effect of removal of duty on imported rice. Japan, Java and China do not seem in need of foreign rice just, now,
