THE OUTLOOK FOR SILVER.

The following extracts are made from Messrs Samuel Montague & Co.'s annual view of trade and finance for the year | 1924:—

Though actual movements of silver" in London have been diminished, dealings in silver for forward delivery have been quite active. Very large speculative a counts for China and India Have been opened and closed, necessitating, as cus tomary, extension from one two-month period to another, and a considerable amount of business has been transacted in London as the world's silver centre for foreign clients, though the silver was not imperted into the United Kingdom. but was shipped on instructions of the buyers direct to them from America and elsewhere.

Chasinuch as the strife in China, when. ever active, causes boarding and at the ean time & demand for silver coin with which pay troops, any recrudescênce of trouble is a hull point for silver: any prolonged period of lassitude is a bear point. for cash held up, for safety in Shanghai and other ports would then be released for circulation.

Taking into account the improved con ditions et trade in the Far East, the possibility of coinage demand from the Continent. and the present comparative y low her reached by the price of shiver, there appears to be some ground for a hopeful view or the future of the market during 1925.

It was but a toss of the coip January 1st whether the price of rubber was Exed for average purposes at is. Gd. per i or ander If the averaKe daily price for the three months ended noon that day worksi mit at is. 6d..} there would be a 10 per cent. increase in exportable quantities of rubber from Malaya. Ceylon ani the Straits Settlements. fi under, there would h 1 '5 perent increase, the differ. ence in increase invoking additional supplies of either to cons or 1,500 tung As it during the next three months. turned out as the close of a thrilling morning, although by only the narrowest margins, the average proveil to be below the required level of 1, 8d., the actual figure bring, Is. 3... and the extra percentage of production to be released in the February April quarter" was there fore limited to 5 per cent. On this know ledge the market closet with every in dication of strength, a toar no doubt also influenced by equfident expectation that the steadily diminishing London stock will undergo further substantial depletion in the near future. It was re duced by 0.210 tons during 1924, of which as much as 20,346, was accounted for in the last four months of the year, clear evidene that the Stevenson scheme is performing its allotted task, even though it be a slow process. It has already-lift T ed growers from a state of affairs in volving loss to a profit-earning · stage enabling the majority to pay small dividends. The position should develop with greater rapidity during the next fow months if American trade require- ments mature as they are expected to do. Chinn Express and Telegraph (Lon-,, dot).
