WHY PARIS LEADS WORLD OF

FASHION.

Paris is very much aänoyed at sugges bious made lately that London should become the dressmaking centre of the world. The interesting thing about the matter is that there should be annoyance instead of ridicule. It is the habit of Parisians, at least to ridicule the lank garments and ejected felt hats in which Englishwomen feel it incumbent spon them to come to Paris, and, inciden tally, the Frenchman's attire often serins exceedingly comic to the English visitor. But hitherto it has occurred "to Paris dressmakers to take English competition Paris bas in design really seriously. been the centre of fashion for so many centuries that it would almost seem is though it best suited the taste of the many nationalities who buy their clothes there. It is true, of course; that Paris lies on the direct route to very many places, but this would not alone be Selent to account for its pre-eminence. One more point stands out very pro minently in connection with this vexed- question-a great many of the Paris designers are, in point of fact. English. But, even No, it is difficult to think of English designers deing the same work in London.

The reason is net very far to seek. People of genuine taste do not differ very grently alf the world over. The differ- ence lies in the taste of the ordinary person. Paris has so far the advantage over other countries that the ordinary person has more taste than the ordinary person of a good many other countries. It may be good or bad taste, but it is definite and spontaneous, and as such, it impresses itself upon other people. Probably nowhere are there to be found so many people who can de beautiful em- broidery, who can design exquisitely, who carry out an idea, once given, with littla touches of originality which prevent it from ever having the staleness of a mere Moreover, the French never overdo an idea: they tire too quickly of it, for one thing, and they have an other ten quickly for it to stay very long. Thus French idea hardly ever turns into a principle, as is the case in Germany and in England. This is the real reason for French pre-eminence in dress and it is one which will take a very rewas deal of overthrowing or even rivalling

to be seen friquently, also a darker shade, which is most becoming in velvet. The Directoire influence in the world of dress naturally has brought forth Directoire models in hats. There is a curtain old-world charm in these new styles, but in a city where the narrow gilhouette predominates, it requires cour, age to wear a style so contrary to the prevailing mode. This evidently ex plains why, although many of the lead- ing houses are showing these styles, there in the are very few actually worn. streets..

The millinery departinent, cheq. Moly- neaux, which is now very well known, is Taking charming models in velves with a cockade in either velvet or ribbon Considering his preference for velves in his collection this year, it is not surpris ing that he has carried out his ideas for hats in the sane material. Lanvin atso believes in designing her own hats and she has many attractive shapes for wear- ing with her simple street clothes. Many other houses are following this example, because they realize that often their best models are ruined by an unsuitable hat.
