The Chinese Ecunomic Bulletin states that the net Salt Revenue, after meeting administrative expenses, credited in the Group Banks during the year 1824 amounted to 870,544,000, which shows decrease of 30,001,000 as compared with the revenue realised in

1093 (879,543,000), and is a serious decrease on the revenue · realised in all former years since 1918, The decrease largely if not entirely, due to the dificulty and uncertainty of transportas tidu on account of the civil wars the lower Yangtze the confusion caus and the North of China, as well as

As by ed by the arbitrary interference of Tuchun Ch'i of Nanking with the Salt Administration during the last four months of the year; in direct violation of the Reorganisation Loan Agreement. All obligations secured on the Salt Revenue, amounting to $20,777,000, were fally met and I the surplus funds released to the Chinese Government during 109 Amounted

on account of refund of Reorganisation Losa payments for the year). Of this amount some $33,486,000 represents sums either retained locally or appropriated by provincial author- ties or military com credited

These re tentions, which were

in the Group Banks by special arrangements, do not include the full amount of re- venue retained by the Kwangtung local authorities, the Canton District Inspec torate having been closed in May 1920 owing to the illegal interference of the local authorities and not having beca re-opened during the year 1994. Ia addition "to the retentions made in 1959 in the

and the three Manchurian provinces, part of the revenue of the provinces of Kiangsu, Anhwei and Chekiang was also retained daring the last months of the "year 1994, owing to local military action. The reserve in the Group Banks was maintained during the year at $7,000,000.

ed from a shareholder the Chairman pre- seated a statement shewing the total turn- ever, which was the gross profit, and the net profit. for each year since 1920. 1920 the gross profit in the Printing De- partment way 8170,000 and, the net profit 855,000. In regard to a request for particulars of the working of the business between October 4th and December 31st laat, the Chairman stated that he had not been able to prepare that, the books not har ing been written up, pending the passing of the accounts that afternoon. As soon as the accounts were passed he would at once prepare a statement.

The same shareholder said the point was that the shareholders required to know whether the business had done any better.

After a fairly lengthy discussion of means of reducing expenditure, a share- holder said:-" As a definite proposal I would suggest that "the business runs until March ist, when stock is taken and a six months account brought out, and the shareholders called together again for the purpose of taking the consensus of opinion is to whether it is policy to carry the business on or wind it up.'

After the resolution has been seconded the Chairman stated, in reply to Mr. Luscombe, that he expected a reduction of at least 88,000 in salaries, and he cx- pected more business in the Printing De partment.

The motion was carried by, 9 votes to 5. The motion for the adoption of the report and" accounts was carried ́unani... mously.

Of course, sir, tastes differ. Some people have judgment and others have none. Bat I've more respect, siz, for the man who smokes always an inferior cigarette than the man who smokes good ones one day and just anything the next. Yes, sir, I can say it posi- tively hurts to band Kensitas to such smokers. Kensitas were not intended for such poor. judges because Kensitas are too good to waste. No, sir, they were made for you and all good judges of good cigar-
