The Book from which these six stories have been translated is a well-known collection of Chinese tales called "Chin Ku Ch'i Kuan" or "Observations of Strange Matters, New and Old.'

These tales appear to have been written towards the end of the Ming Dynasty, and the author has appended a few notes at the end of each story to enable the reader unacquainted with things Chinese to gain a faller appreciation of the stories.
