It is interesting to speculate how the two games came to be divided. During the seventeenth century, probably owing to the Puritan movement, football de clined in town and country, but it was still kept alive in the school The form played probably depended on the usture of the playground.

A CRICKET PROBLEM. THE M.C.C. AND THE OBSTRUCTION CASE

With reference to the case of obstruc. tion and the umpire's decision in a local cricket match in the North of England during the past season, the following further statement has been issued by the M.C.C

It appears that there has been some misconception of the secretary of the M.C.C.'s observations on the case in the North of England where a left-handed batsman, in playing an off ball, turned his bat to hit the ball in the manner of a right handed batsman and the umpire; gave him out for obstruction and unfair play.

The committee of the M.C.C., to make the matter quite clear, add that there is nuthing illegal of itself in the action, but there may be attendant circumstances which would justify an umpire in decid- ing that such an net was 'obstructive or 'antair'.

EUROPEANS MURDERED IN INDIA.

Replying to Sir Frank Nelson, the Under Secretary of State for India, stated last month that, so far as his in- formation went, the number of persons of European descent killed in British India since January, 1023, had been 10 and the number attacked, but not killed, 22 These figures included eight murders and three other outrages on and near the North-West Frontier, attacks on police or other officers in the execution of their duty, assaults or murders on trains or elsewhere with robbery as the motive, at- tacks on" managers of tea gardens, at- tackx by villagers on British soldiers out abooting, as well as political offences,
