THE MUSIC-HALL "STARS.” SIR A, BUFT CANNOT FIND THEM. The Empire Theatre, Leicester Square, W.C.. has ceased to be a music hall, and will again revert to the showing of a film.

The experiment has been a great dis Appointment and has cost us a lot al money. I should hate to tell how much money we have lost over the Empire since July.

The public is there, but the artists are not.

I have had agents and representa- tives searching all over the Continent the United States, and this country for performers suitable as star turns for the Empire, and we have found on two! Miss Nora Bayes and Mr. Frank Tinbey. I have tried to engage a few other artists and tarns, bat either they would not come to London or else their terms were prohibitive.

We do not breed music hall artists': in this country as we used to breed them. The rogue of revue brought young artists under the producer and so killed individual initiative. And many of our best artists, men and weinen who would) be star music-hall turus if they cared to, have been lured away-quite naturally- by the gigantic salaries offered in the United States.

One well-known English comedian is being paid 2500 a week in New York; another is to go there next year at a

· salary of £700 a week: We simply cannot compete with. that sort of thing."

Sir Alfred Butt said the future of the Empire Theatre is not yet settled. He may make the experiment of running twice or thrice daily variety programmes there at popular prices, of he may keep it as a film theatre.

The theatre has been reopened with the film version of Two Little Vagabonds, in which Yvette Guil bert plays a chief part. It is one of the finest films 1, have ever seen," is Sir Alfred's opinion. of it.

MUSIC BRINGS SLEEP. LISTENING IN CURE" FOR NERVE CASES.

Listening-in as a cure for nerve cases ad insomnia, is being recognised in hospitals, which are stated to br installing wireless receivers almost as a matter of routine.

The discovery is due to a well-known mental specialist, who declared that he noticed that after listening for an even- ing

the broadcast programme, the patients slept well.

Sir Henry Hadow says he firmly con- vinced of the healing value of music, while Sir Bruce Porter attributes the high turnover of a hundred beds per mouth in the Third London General Hospital to the distraction which musje provides.

1t is claimed that braodcasting pro- vides the most simple and most con venient method of bringing music to" beb ridden patients.

At some of the nerves hospitals-for instance Maddesley Hospital and Den- mark Hill-music, singing and dancing have been found very effectiev.

A Wimpole Street physician says that some kinds of music are better than others for sick persons. He was folk songs and dazer times induce sleep, bat for neurasthenic cases brass bands and military music are the best stimulant,
