CHINA'S CUSTOMS REVENUE.
** LIVING IN A FOOL'S PARADISE."
When at the beginning of the present week we set about finding causes, in the midst of apparent trade depression, for the increased Custams revenue of China, representing in the case of Shanghai an increase of Haikuan Tls. 70,000,000 in trade, figures were not avail- able for a completa analysis. This we pointed out and accordingly confined ourselves to a curaber of general con- siderations, one of which was that the medium sized firms doing a larger business
less than heretofore, while the really firms were not. This conclusion is atrikingly borne out in the weekly busi- ness circular issued by Messrs. Jibert & Co., which in addition places a none soo favourable construction upon the fact. Tables of the import of cotton piece goods, yarn and woollen cloth are given in the circular mentioned, and, adducing his conclusions from these. the writer goes on to say:--

Inquiries prove that many dealers of experience and good standing have had little or no share in the increased imports and in fact had a substantially smaller turn-over in 1924 thun in any previous year, and that dealers with nothing to lose if things went against them have been importing indiscriminately with little regard to the state of the market. So however, as certain banks can lang be found to Enance business of this nature there ean bo no remedy to this state of affairs, and the legitimate
trader must be, content to stand aside until the inevitable liquidation of bankrupt stocks takes place.
"The moral of the situation can be read in the fact that 453 recognized Shanghai native piece goods hoog have gone out of existence in the past few weeks. It was already well known in the antume that most of them could not even produce sufficient funds to pay the import duty on their goods."
If this is a correct estimate of the position and one recognizes that a firm of this standing would be the last to in-
