PLATONIC MARRIAGE!
[BY LADY NOTT-BOWER.} .
It sounds like a contradiction in terms! A platonic. friendship we can all under- stand, even if we refuse to believe in it, bat, why should a couple decide to bind themselves with the heavy chain of mar riage vows without either of the two strong motives that may be held to Justify them-love that desires perman. ence, or the hope of children that de- mands permanence l
If neither of them traseca exista, why marry at all? Why not remain just friends, as faithful, intimate and derot ed as you please, and yet free for that other possible relationship of marringe? A life-long bond that can never, with credit or ignity. he lossened should surely be avoided by all who value per sonal freedom, unless there are over. whelming reasons in support of it
༣
But the arguments that are advanced in favour of platonie marriage are singularly unconvincing. I read that someone who has tried it for twelve years claims that he and his wife were always friends, that as lovers they were simply not attracted to one another, that they were business partners, taking their social pleasures together, and that as friends they surpassed the loves of men and women, or real husbands and wives."
It sounds very plausible, but surely it! sticks in the throats of average overv dny folk!
A TRAVESTY OF MARRIAGE,
The who are, well acquainted with all kindly joys of a happy married life! may well resent the assertion that some thing less datural yet vastly superior has been discovered-by someone who lacks the necessary knowledge to make a true comparison.. And, after all, if there is to be no reat married relationship why drag to the question of marring at all.

Yet the only definite reason advanced "avoidance of scandal." Is that really a salicient motive for embarking on a farewhich may 50 ensity become tragedy? For, however kindly and affre tionate, the tie of such a platonic mar Triage might be, one cannot but realise that at any moment is might be seriously jeopardised if the "real thing" came into the life of either party to it.
HAPPINESS THAT MIGHT HAVE-BLEN Then the friendly bond would become an intolerable fetter holding back the happiness that might have been; unless, indeed, those who embark upon such
modern marriages do not intend them to exclude something more than friendship in other directions; but prefer that, re- veraing the usual order of things in everyday life, the business relationship should be permanent and the other re- lationship temporary.
But any such ideas, though they occasionally find plausible advocates in "advanced" Setion, do not seriously, commend themselves to ordinary healthy" minded men and women.
It is sometimes argued that this is be cause the majority are not only intensely conservative in habit, but alad definitely La bourgeois" in spirit that they shrink from any change in the things to which they are accustomed.
Most of us are fully aware that the institution of marrings, as at present. practised, by no means invariably pro- duces perfect, happiness. It is easy to point out its manifold defects and many novel experiments (such as the one w pare now considering) are from time to time put forward for its improvement,
SPOILING A GOOD INSTITUTION, “CON Marriage should be much more than its primary purpose-it may be much leas; hut those who deliberately set out to make it something entirely different are likely to apai: a good, if not a per- feet, institution.
Yet however gravely we may disagree with this doctrine of platonic marriage it is nevertheless possible that it may like many another rash experiment serve a useful educational purpose. For PILLS that it may be perfectly pass ible for a couple to live together in close asscelation without any really intimate relationship at all may have an uplift ing tendency, and is therefore certainly worth consideration.
