It was officially announced on Dec. end that the Amalgamated Wireless Co. has accepted & tender from the Marconi Co. for the erection in Australia of two

stations on the bean system for com municating direct with Canada and England respectively, at the approxi wate cost of £120,000, which was the timit fixed in the agreement between the the Government "and Commonwealth Amalgamated Co. The station communi. cating with Englard will be capable of transmission in two directions. The sta tions will have a guaranteed traffic capa- city three times that previously guarda- teed by a high-power station. They will be equipped with high-speed sending and receiving apparatus capable of handling four messages simultaneously, one to and one from England, one to and one from The official announcement states that it is anticipated that the ser. vice will operate twenty-four hours each agreement day continuously. The revised with the Commonwealth Ca reuires that the company should arrange for stations of a duplex trafic capacity of 21.000 words per day. The contrast with the Marconi Co. "includes a guarantee of double that capacity, the total for the two stations being 8,400 words daily. The stipulated period for the erection of the stations is nine months from the time available. which is almnes immediately!

Thus, far from the scheme to establish beam stations in Australia and England having been abandoned, as asserted in some quarters, not the slightest hitch ha occurred in the plans for recipreval beam stations between Australia, Canada, and England. Mr. Fisk, managing director of Amalgamated Wireless. Lid states that preparations for the construction of the stations and completion, of the or ganisation are progressing rapidly and smoothly. The prospects, indeed, are far more satisfactory than when the scheme was approved. Later experiments have strengthered optimistic anticipations as to the hours in the day during which communication will be possible at the high

GREAT FORWARD STEP.

The acceptance by the Amalgamated Wireless Co. of Australasia, Ltd., of the tender of the Marcori Co. for the erec

stations in Aus- tion of two heur tralia is the begining of a great for- ward step in the improvement of the At present Empire's communications.

"

the wireless route from Australia to England is via the United States of America, but when the Marconi Co: have constructed the two new stations in the Southern Dominion there will be direct communication not only between Aus tralia and Canada as well These sta tions, which will operate during every to deal minute of the day, will be able with 86400 words per diem, and to that extent will augmert the facilities at pre- sent available to business men and the Press. In view of the fact that the majority of the shares in the Ama!- gamated Wireless Co. are held by the Australian Government, it is interesting recent assertion that that to recall a Government proposed to drop the "beam" for the short wave system, a report of which the acceptance of Marconi's terder effectively dispores.

"

According to the agreement between the General Post Office and the Marconi Co.. published last July, the company," as contractors for the Post Office, are to erect beam stations in England with. in twenty-six weeks from the day upon which sites for the transmission and re- ceiving sections are placed at their dis posal, and they undertake.to have a station available in Canada for com- munication with England within the same period. Provision ia also to be made for extensions which will oper up similar communication with South Africa, India, and Australia. In Eag- land, under decision of Mr. Mac- Donald's Government, the Post Offer will run the stations, but as the Marconi Co. alone have adequate experience of "system, the lately developed beam they are to erect the stations, and band them over when, efficient,
