AMERICAN "HEIRESS'S "
EXPLOITS,
During the Fifth Assembly of the League of Nations there was in Geneva one of our greatest novelists getting copy for a new Dovel, and one of our most distinguished Tondon dramatic critici getting material for a comic opera. Had these two dis- tinguished people remaine! little longer in Calvin's city they might hive collected a good deal of material for their respective works. both in adveniors and comedy. Although there win a good deal that was of interest to a covelist of fietin or a dramatist of comic opera during the As- sembly of the League of Nations, there I was not auch ä living chanter to finish up A story or a comedy as has just now been revealed in the police-courts of Geneva
A young damsel, åged 20, hailing from Zurich, arrived in deneva from Paris last spring. She was very good looking aud wali dressed, and altogether most present- able. It was not long before she made the acquaintance of a young man, a Čirnevess official, to whom she confided that her came was Miss Dolores van Hamel, that she was an Americao, and that she left home because her people wanted her to marry an ordinary rich Yankee a captain in the United States army, whom she did not love, and therefore would not marry; that she came to Geneva for the purpose of waiting until she was of age, when she would be entitled to be her own mistress und in possession of about 3-40,000,000.
The young Gonevene official naturally was very much attracted by Dolores,” and- particularly by the $40,000,000. Accord ingly be introduced her to his people, and she was invited by them to their home, where she took up ber abode, and, of course, became engagel to the official. The.
young young heiress was then introduced to many of the patricina families in Geneva, und was treated like a dollar princess." The marriage of the young couple was fixed for the end of November this year, and, as mower we going to be of no consideration- 10 their future happiness, the heiress bought i a beautiful villa on the shore of the Take „of Genera,,of course on credit. For this
villa choice carpets, china, linen, and three. motor-cars were bought, and, in fact, not only all the necessaries of life but also the luxuries of life were to be installed. So impressed were the Genevere aristocratic families with Dolores and her forty million dollars that they could not make too much of her, and during the last six months it is said she conquered the hearts of area the hardest Calvinistic families.
As the marriage was supu to take place it was necessary that, at any rate, a few million dollars'should be transferred from the United States to some bank in Geneva, in order to 1ng for the villa, motor-cars, jewellery, and other little thing, which were ordered for De wedding 'The parents of the future husband of Dolores thought it advisable that she should get some bank of repute in Geneva to make arrangements for the transfer of the money. Dulores therefore went to a well-known bank here, and saw a bank clerk who had been in the United States for over fifteen years, and consequently knew all about money transactions in the States. He questioned the young girl about her fortune in the States, and was puzzled to find that she did not seem to understand anything about the matter. He became suspicions, and coasaited one of the direc tor of the bank, who thereupon warned some of the firm with whom the young beiress had been dealing. In consequence the police authorities were wakened up, and it was not long before they discovered that the girl was a don estic servant, and was for some time in the service of several families in Geneva; that her name was Sophie Kaufmann, a Uerman Swiss; and that she had been deported from France for stealing.
She was arrested and taken to prison, but, as all the property purchased by her has been returned to the owners, and as no one bar come forward with any criminal charge against her, the case "has been treated as a huge joke, and no one laughs more over this" damsel's`adventures than the Genevese 1 bemselves, especially as the so-called patricians are supposed to be so exclusive.

A KULE-ÖT-THREE SUM.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO CIVILISE
MANY":
I have received from a correspondent, (says the Editor of the dedicat Press and Circular) an interesting paper on the evolution of the horse. The author won- ders how many of those who frequent race meetings realise that it has taken some three million years (others say six million) to evolve the thoroughbred from its primitive ancestor of the Eocene period, to which Professor Owen, its dis coverer, gave the name of byracotherium. This little creature was no more than eleven inches high and it roaméd about the Barsby regions of Kent, where It fossil remains bave been found. Pro fessor Osborn estimates that it took one million years to eliminate the fifth
of
digit of the horse, and two milosteral
to accomplish the reduction the toes representing the second and the fourth digits, and the consequent form of the feet of the modern horses, which, embryo, still show traces of these lost
digits."
My correspondent pertinently asks; "If it took one million years to eliminate the fifth digit of the horse and two million years to eliminate the second and fourth digits, how will it take to eradicate
long the are and, the tiger from man?" That is a rule-of-three sam which I do not feel myself competent to answer. Neverthe less the problem is an interesting one, because it brings home to the mind how slow and deliberate are the methods by which nature proceeds.
