"THE YEOMEN OF THE GUARD."
SECOND PERFORMANCE. ....
If the flattering reception accorded to the first performance of Gilbert and Sullivan's Opern The Yeomen of the Guan, given by the Hongkong Phil harmonic Society at the Theatre, Royal fast Friday night, left the performers, in no doubt as to the success of their effort, they must be more than gratified with the reception accorded to their second performance on Saturday night by a crowded and most enthusiastic house. Encores frequently had to be given to vocal items which specially delighted the house ne unstinted appreciation of the audience ovidently had its due effect on tho stage. It gave to the performers an increased confidence" that had a notice- ably beneficial effect in more than one instance on the, work, and Saturday night's performance must be pronounced `a success that we und hardly hope to see
excelled by any amateur combination
Mr. W. G. Wheller, the producer, has every reason to be proud of his initial success in the Colony. He has discovered some rare histrionic talent and has most successfully developed it. His native: modesty, we suppose, prevented him on Saturday night following the leading artistes across the stage at the fall of the curtala to receive from the audience a last tribute of appreciation, but he can be assured that the credit due to himself and also to Mr. Stanley Collett the hon. musical director and conductor, for the great success of production, does not pass uarecognised by the audiences who have enjoyed the performances.
The opera is to be repeated to-night, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday-next-

BLASTING TRAGEDY.
THREE COOLIES · KILLED AT
CAUSEWAY BAY.
.
GIRL'S HAND CUT OFF.
A fatal accident occurred at Causeway' Bay at about 5 p.m. yesterday near the Asiatic Petroleum Company's oil-tanks, resulting in the death of three coolies and serious injuries to four others.
It appears that blasting had been in progress on the hillside, and that when this was over, a number of coolies, male and female, went to the spot to collect small stones for breaking up to make cement. While they were thus engaged, a huge boulder became suddenly - dis- lodged, and crashed down without warn- ing among the coolies. One of them, a girl, had her hand eat clean off by a sharp edge of the boulder...
