SCOTTISH SPORT
RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP,
SURPRISES IN LEAGUE,
November 5th
In Scottish Rugby the big event was the
rout of the Galgow High School (FP) team by Herioe's. It was the Glasgow club's second reversey and it puts them.
far back in the championship race. In contra distinction the form shown by Heriot's and the big score recorded have improved their position as candidates for the honours of the season. It was an amazing victory both as regards its de cisiveness and the manner in which it was gained. Surprises were not spring in the inter-Academical game, or in the Royal High School (FP)-Watsonian watch The Glasgow Academicals and the Myronide team were comfortable win ners, and there was nothing very start- lug in any of the other results, unless it was the victory gained by Melrose at Rel

THE LEAGUE OUTLOOK.
The Scottish League competition was, considerably worsened by Saturday's results. Unexpected defeats to Hibernian nad Celtic discounted the chances of these clubs as potential candidates for the championship and widened the gap that separates Airdrieonians and. Bangers, from the main body of the competitors Already Airdrieonians lend Hibernian. by four points and Celtic by five points, and Hangers have a leads of only one point less in each instance. These are not overwhelming odds, but at this stage are substantial advantages, and full of significance if the defeat encountered at home by Hibernian, and Celtic's equally unexpected reverse at fireenock mark the close of there clubs serious challenge for the leading places Beyond Hibernian and Celtic, the position is well-nigh hope less, Hamilton Academicals, the fifth club on the table, being eight points behind the leaders, and as we des
descend the table the outlook grows correspondingly worse. Except for those, therefore, who are able to extract entertainment or interest from the relegation scramble, the League will be at best . two-harse show. It may be reduced to even worse than that, and Rangers once again given

direction are slightly less prevalent. For 1 week or two Airdrieonians had scraped through their engagements by the har rowest margins, and even then only after being favoured by fortune, and confidence in the leaders' ability was considerably shaken. But last week Airdrieonians, against an appreciably improved Syr United eleven, pleased their friends and silenced their critics.
Football of high quality also dis- tinguished the meeting of Hibernian and Falkirk in which the latter unexpectedly Continental Ports prevailed by the narrowest margin. The
contest was particularly rich in combi Aad skilful forward play (It was al A gether a different matter at Dundee, where Third Lanark gained the points The Glasgow Club were weakly represen ted, but the Dundee team proved quite incapable of taking advantage of their opponents' weakness, and were deserved beaten in a game that had scarcely a redeeming feature.

The football played in Edinburgh be tween teams representing the Scottish League and the Irish League, was of moderate standard rand entirely lacking in thrills. As was generally expected, the irishmen were voutplayed: 10 UN EVER greater extent than three clear goals SPORES QÖYGIP,
For long we have been familiar with the sight of fair enthusiasts at Rugby matches in Scotland. At a recent Trend- ly game at New Anniesland between two well-balanced teams drawn from Glasgow and district clubs, the innovation of bar- ing ladies act as touch judges was tried- with every satisfaction. Unfortunately rain-fell heavily throughout the game. and it was two sadly bedraggled flag- waggers that ploughed their way through the mud to the pavilion at the faith of the game,
Next to football-Rugby or Association the big interest of the modern school- boy is the motor car and its mechams A striking combination of the two in- teresta, was shown' last week at a Rugby match by an Academy boy who, when the Academicals had made victory secure, was overheard piping out the counsel to the captain - That's right ories- change to second gear
