PROOFS OF JUDGMENT, Now judgment is both present and future. We judge ourselves every day by our attitude to Christ, but it is to the Last Judgment that I wish to direct your thoughts this morning. We profess our belief in it at almost every service. In the Creed we say From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead." We sing in the Te Deum "We believe that Thou shall be our judge': We can trace the conception of a Final Judgment

in the books of the Old Testament and

Many of these visitor, and especially those who have come from the uttermost ends of Empire should welcome a book--- shortly to be issued by H.H. Stationery Ulice probably about the middle of next month which will be the most sumptu- ously illustrated that has ever been pub fished on the architectural glories and artistic possessions of the Abbey. As a Government publication it will be issued at a price that will include, no profit and will be the next volume of the Reports only the actual cost of printing. This of the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments. The Commission has issued counties of Hertfordshire, Buckingham already seven volumes, dealing with the

shire, and Essex, which have progres- sively increased in splendour of illustra tion and wealth of material. Next comes London, to be described in three volumes, of which the first is to be concerned ex- clusively with Westminster Abbey. As each volume forms the report of the Commission, it is addressed to the King, and it may well be imagined that this account of the Royal Coronation church will possess for him unusual interest.

The volume will in the main follow the plan of previous ones, but with certain modifications. Thus it will have an his torical survey by Dr. James, Provost of Etoa. Its text has been read in proof by Canon Westlake and by ProfessorT Lethaby-the outstanding authorities on the documentary and architectural pos- sessions of the Abbey it will have a plan of the Abbey and its precincts, produced in colours, which has been in course of preparation during many years.

The glories of the book will, however. consist in the illustrations, of which there ill be approximately four pages to every page of text! Every one of these has trate particularly those artistic treasures been specially taken, and they will illus

But not only in the Bible do we had proof of it but also in the general con- science of man. Conscience is not the voice of God, but it is one of the chan- nels through which the voice of God is most easily heard. "And conscience not only approves or condemos us now, but it anticipates a final vindication of its own verdict; for therein lies its authorita- tive tone from which we can never get away. As Tertullian, one of the first writers of Christian ethics said long ago "It witnesseth also that God is its Judge -God seeth: I commend to God. God shail 'recompense me.!!

own to facilitate photography of certain recumbent effigies from above.

The fron tispiece will be coloured reproduction of the wonderful tomb of the Abbey's builder-King Henry II

It is not, perhaps, to be expected that in place so well studied as the Abbey, any startling discoveries should be made but certain things will be brought to light which may well come as a surprise, even to those who think they know the Abbey best. The work of the Commissioners is, strictly speaking, confined to monumenta of an age prior to 1714, but, owing to the special position of the Abbey and in order that the book may be used as a guide to ita memorials, they will name and des cribe the position of all such memorials as are laten in date than those they des cribe fully,

Moreover most men have some kind of fear of death-there are perhaps not many here who are completely free from it And this is really the fear of judgment. When St. Paul reasoned before Felix the Governor, of righteousness and the judg ment to come, we read that. Felix was terrified. And when the apostle argued with the Athenians about the claims of Christ, they greeted his remarks with mockery. For what did an extra God or two matter, when there were so many ↑ But when he went on to say that God be torn away and we shall he revealed hath appoisted a day in which He shall judge the world in righteousness" they dropped their mockery, and were silent. It is because of judgment that men fear to die. I
