CHURCHGOING IN HONGKONG,
We had been talking to Bichard about the absence of his cheery countenance at the Cathedral, and immediately he be came voluble. Richard is quite splendid in his way, and "has represented the Colony, at most things, except cricket. ***Patre," he said. "What can a man dot I am booked up to the middle of Decem-

Richard, we recognised as representa- tive, and we also detected a lack of pro portion in his Sunday programmes.
Then Mr. French, to whom we spoke later, said that he thought the Cathedral was an admirable institution, a monu ment English tradition, and so on; but the thing which kept him away was our use of the Revised Version. Really, how could one possibly listen to anything Hongkong to Gap Rock{ but the Authorised-Of course. Mr. Firench occupies a Government post. But most of the men we listened to had tremendon's sense of care for their
bodily fitness. "You know, Padre, you must swim in the. Summer. and ariything under a whole Sumlay in the water would be almost suicidal."
But the weakness of all the excuses- and when they are analysed they are found to be woefully wrak-lay in the extreme selfishness they displayed. We know per: fectly well that most of these men were Lable to get a game of something almost every day of the week. The fault was that they turned the admirable adage, You must play games to keep fit."" into, You must play games and generally in dulge in pleasure, to the exclusion of everything else, except your office work." We thought it would be interesting to have a nical statement of how much physical exercise is required by the citizens of the Colony, to keep themselves

The rat position is that when people e out East they are apagainst a non- Churchgoing tradition. This means that they speedily fall away from contact with the vital things that matter, and in most cass the harm done is more real than apparent. in one sense, there is peeliar charm about the English pagan public schoolboy; on the other band, no- badly is so unsatisfactory as the man who is physically fit. but who possesses do true moral and spiritual backbone. Moreover, the harm done by the non- Churchgoer is greater here than it is at home, for in this place evegy Britisher. "whether lu likes it or not, is really a missionary. He comes out as a repre- sentative of Christianity, and if he is in any sense of the word, à follower of his Muster, he cantor but copy His Fri example and go to a place to worship. There are Missionaries who minister to the heichen, and their efforts are made appulingly more difficult by the callous.Sus. indifference of the many who,, claiming the name of Christian, do not make any outward effort to live up to it as regards public worship. This pirit of indiffer ence is carried so far that there are children here who are not even baptised, and many others who do not receive any real instruction in the faith of the Church.
The solition to such a sorry state of things is not easy to and. It would be
helpful it more of the elder and leading
men in the Colony gave a stronger had to the younger people in attendance at public worship. The women of the Colony might also use their powerful influence more in this direction. There are some splendid men whom we know, who make a rule never to play games on Sunday. until they have attended Divine Service. What is needed is more outspokennew on this subject. and a realisation the the present attitude lets down the Padres and also the Church, to which "everyone owes so much. There are sins of omis- sion, as well as commission, and it is St. Paul, who tells us that we should not forsake the assembling of ourselves toge-i ther for worship.
If the battle of Waterloo was won ol the playing fields of Eton it was not in the era of Sunday games, and we can be quite certain that our prestige as a British community does not depend upon the vagaries of Fanling Tever. We can at hast pray that we may be kept. "from God's word to be blasphemed among the heathen," and that He may give us grace to form a right judgment on this im portant question.-St. John's Cathedral Yutem

I was very much struck in the adwir. able lecture on Early Buddhism by the Bes. J. A. Romanis Lee at his referencesPlease to the way in which the great men of the East influenced their followers lợ various acts of asceticism Buddha is reputed at one time to have eaten a thou- sand grains of rice a day and in the course of a few years fasting he cut this amount down to one grain per diem. Gandhi likewise fasis to impress and influence his followers and to make them realise his own earnestness and resolve. May I suggest, Sir that the members of the Church Body undertake a sort of public fast, so long na there is a debt on St. John's Cathedral? It is perhaps unlikely that their main diet is rice, but if they reduced their allowance of food by n quarter of air ounce a day, I feel cerisin that the public interest and sympathy would soon be aroused and the deht of 30,000, would speedily be cleared. I am aware that such methods are not usunily adopted by westerners, but we live in the East and we may learn something from our neighbours.
"The Church Body consists of the Bishop of Victoria, The Senior Clap Jain, Sir Claud Severa, Mr. M. E..F. Airy, Mr. W. L Pattenden (Hon. Secretary) Mr. H. B. L Dowbiggin, Mr. J. Owen Hughes (Hon. Treasurer), and Mr. J. Witchell.]
