The cables have hitherto conveyed the impression that his withdrawal into the wilderness, ns it were, was an act of his own volition, and it seemed to redound, to his credit, since there was no possible hope of peace so long as he remained in a position of power and influeneo in Peking, as that would have been an obvious challenge to We Pei-er and his military supporters

CANTON NEWS. CHEN CHIUNG MING TO ADVANCE ON CANTON?

[FROM OUR CHINESE COXRESPONDENT.].

General Chen Chiung-ming, command- er-in-chief of the Cantonese Army now at Swatow, will hold a formal conference of his commanders to-day (December 1st), when it is expected that he will issue an order to march on Canton to cust the Kuomintang regimé.

General Chen, on November gsih, issued a statement which may be briefly trans- lated as follows:---

Our Cantonise Army has always looked upon the restoration of peace and integrity of Kwangtung as its primary duty. Why Have all officers and men of our army suffered, and so many citizena contributed towards their support these two long years, if the salvation of Kwangtung was not their object If we fall to Bet at once, how ean we fulfil the expectation of the people? Since the massacre of people and destruction of property in the Western City of Canton, delegations after delegations of Canton and Hong- kong merchants have approached us at Hoifung and Swatow with a request to move our troops to save, the people from further suffering. Under this urgent pressure, we cannot refrain from hasten- ing our mission of relief. The falsa report that I, Chiung-ming, am not in favour of advancing towards Canton has been a fabrication of the enemy. The Cantonese people are ready to wel- eame our return, and we cannot shirk our duty. Let us all be united with one heart and one spirit in the co-opera- tion for the salvation of Kwangtung. All offers and men of our army are hereby ordered to return immediately to their several posts and be prepared for the attack. Detailed orders will be issued soon after a further conferencs of chief commanders. All should be prepared to advance for the relief of Kwangtung without further delay."'.
