TRAVELLERS' TALES.

It is enrious how those who travel, any- where in the least of the beaten track are always tempted to sit down and write a thick book about their expers ences: they all do it, regarillóss of whether their experiences are worth re- cording, and equally regardless of their ability to record them. It must be a most arduous task to write a book of that kind, especially as there is no hope of making money by it, and ane aaturally wonders why it is that they all, without exception, do it

I shall now tell you.

I have just returned from a prolonged stay in the secret, mysterious heart of Africa. As a matter of fact, it is not pearly so secret or mysterious as people imagine all the same, I have had numar- ous interesting experiences.

I have travelled for seven days in native canoe, seen strange reptiles, and been upset in a swamp full of crocodiles: I have discovered most interesting cus toms amongst the most primitive savages, I have been lost in the forest, and en- countered an angry elephant; and finally, I have had a bairbreadth escape from a lion, and was only saved by the fact that | the lion ran away at the same time as I did. There was nothing very out of the way in all this, but after two years with-. out anybody to listen to my experiences, I naturally came home simply bursting to tell my friends of all the exciting things I had done.

Une has often suspected that Sherlock Holmes was a bit hard on Scotland Yard (writes the Manchester Guardian). Cer! tainly even the faithful Watson would be bound to admit that that much-mocked. institution, though lacking silk dressing- gowns, morphia, and bccasional relaxa-, tions on the violin, did a very smart pieca. of work in the Case of the Red-faced M.au.

The facts are revealed by Sir Basil Thomson, who at the time was chief of our Criminal Investigation Department, in an article in English Life which scena rio writers for the movies" might note with advantage. It was 1015, and the "Bradbury" had been newly introduced to a harassed public Much, whole fate of the country, depended on perhaps the the growth of public confidence in it, when the Yard discovered that some thing identical with it in printing and in water-mark, though a trife inferior in paper, was being passed in quantities as coin of the realm. The Red-faced Man, an old hand at this sort of job, was easily enough traced as the utterer" of the forged notes. The trouble was to find the press and the printer. The Red- fooed Man was scrapalous about guard- ing his principal. It was a case of "going fifty-fifty" the printer, and you made what you could by ordering a packet of cigarettes in the dusk and paying for it with a worthless bit of paper, of which the prin ter took half the pretended value. So for

so good; but the printer was still as far from the handcuffs as ever.

Then at last. there came to the little back office s youth about whom two facts were signi- ficant. The sums he staked were always a few pende short of 10 shillings; and his hands were stained with printer's The next scene might content many ducers as an ending.
