So they grew old and were discarded, and know the bitterness of seeing their place taken by the impudent young. Especially bitter must have been the lot of those pretty melodies that immediately pre ceded the advent of jazz, for here was a thing with which they could not-no, simply could not-compete; something they could not understand; something so utterly outside their experience. I dare Bay they weat almost thankfully, so great was their disgust; almost thankfully, tha: particular batch, with a last indignant Bounce of their pretty lilas muslins and a toss of their golden heads. Somewhere in odd corners and backwaters they linger, a little tired, a little worn. perhaps ovca with a dash of cosmetic to make them look younger; but there they are to be found. at enfes in foreign towns or at unfashionable watering places in England, ready to bring out those faded graces which once so intoxicatingly charmed, and which now induce only a not unpleasant melancholy. For it is our past life which they resus-" citate, the old tunes; moments which had forgotten as completely as the tunes themselves, rears which seem to us so remote that they can scarcely have en- tered into our own existence, years when we were different, when we held other creeds, and believed in the Mr & Mrs J. THE MODERN LULLABY. The general hatred of alarm clocks is due to the persistence of the idea that alarm clocks are meant to get you out of bed. This is, of course, ridiculous; they don't do any such thing. If you really have to get up at a certain time. don't ask the alarm clock for help; simply fx an hour in your mind and when it comes round you will find you are there waiting for it. This is the sure way, because you creep up on it if you have eight o'clock on your mind, you will come at it gradually by waking up first at 4.00, then again at 3.00, then at 5.45, then at 8.30, then at 7.00, then at 7.20. then at 7.30, then at 7.35, and so forth, until, when eight o'clock comes, you will more than likely be half-shaved
