BIG NEWSPAPER SALES,

BRITAIN'S STRIKING RECORD.

There are 9.008 daily newspapers in the United States, with an aggregate circulation of 31,450,000. Is the British Isles there are only 153 daily newspapers, but their aggregata cirenlation is nearly half that of America's 2,036.

There are no newspapers in the United States whose circulation compares with that of the Loudon Daily dieit, and scill less with the 2,000,000 circulation of the Sunday Pictorial, the foremost of the two Sunday picture papers published in London.

The reason why London newspapers have a larger circulation than the papers of New York is that the population of Great Britain is concentrated in a com- paratively small aren, whereas that of The United States is" scattered. The Caited States is a country of vast dis- tances, with a population si timos greater than that of Great Britain, scattered over an area 25 times na farge.

In Great Britain there is a population of 700 to the square mile, linked up with the most perfect railway system in the world, which enables London papers to reach the most distant parts of the country in comparatively brief time." In the United States the population is only 3 to the square mile. For these reasods, New York is not a dominating news-. || paper centre in the way that London is. Every big city in the United States is served by its own big dailies, and takes no interest in dailies published in New York.

In spite of the fact that newspaper advertising is more extensively developed in. America than in England, there are ao pewspapers in · America which can. command the rates charged by the Lon- don newspapers with big circulations. The Sunday Pistorial, which is owned chiefly by Lord Bothermere, who also has the controlling interests in the Daily Mail, charges £1,000 a page, though its pages are less than half the size of the | ordinary, daily papers. Its advertising

rate works out a little less than £19 per single column inch. This rate is nearly five times greater than the highest rate charged by any American news. paper.

ADVERTISING EXPERTY MEET.

These facts were disclosed "in the course of the sittings of the Advertising Convention held in London a few days ago. The convention was attended by delegates from all parts of the world, but nearly half of the total of 4,000 came from the United States and Canada.. After the opening session the Convention divided into 15 sections, and during the four days that the proceedings lasted over 300 papers were read by delegates.

The fact that newspapers constitute the cheapest and most effective advertising medium was emphasised by many dele- gates. Mr. William H. Rankin, one of the foremost experts in America, dealt with this subject in the course of his ad- dress. He said that the newspaper went. into the home on the invitation of the occupier, and was paid to go in. That

Was

one important respect in which newspaper advertising differed from postal advertising. Moreover, newapaper. advertising WIS cheaper than other

mediums.

A national advertising campaign, cover- ing the hundred largest cities in the United States, could be carried out at a cost of £20,000 to £100,000. The Ame- rican advertiser who desired to carry out a national campaign could buy a full page of a newspaper delivered into one home for less than half a cent. That was the cost of the white space." It took brains to l the space, and that was where the advertising man, the adver tisement writer and illustrator came in.

HIGHLY PAID WRITERS."

The business derived from an advertise- ment was in proportion to the ability of the man who wrote and illustrated the copy. One man could make the space purchased at less than half a cent worth five cents to the advertiser; another man might make it worth a dollar. That was why advertisement writers in America were being paid salaries" of £2,000 to $20,000 a year. He thought that ever at £20,000 a good man was underpaid.

Mr. Rankin mentioned that Dewpapers which were the best advertising medium, The were, advertising in their rivals. New York Times has found it a paying proposition to advertise in the New York Sun and the American. Lord Bothermere's Sunday Pictorial began its successful career by a full page adver- tisement of ita Erst issue, in every daily newspaper in Great Britain, at a cost of £250,000.-Sydney Sunday Sun.

The Day of the Knight is Here !

IT IS THE

WILLYS KNIGHT

Simplest and most trouble-free type of motor ever invented.

It has the most distnctive and gracefully balanced body of any car

in the market.

-The Willys-Knight car is the four cylinder motored car that makes the six

unnecessary.

The Knight motor is steam principle. The valvus mio two cylindrical sleeves with rectangular slot or ports which when they register with each other and the ports in the block allow the ingross and egress of the games without obstruction. These wile open passages, particularly on the exhaust side, permult a more thorough cleaning of the burnt gasos from the combustion chamber than any other type of motor, so that every ounce of energy nyulable is mtibsə, from the explosive mixture, which gives us such tremendous power

2-It has no valve to grind and no carbon to clean.

BCV The combustion chamber is completely surrounded by water and an alloy piston noted for its great he radiating qualities is used so neither the combustion chamber nor the head of the piston gets hot enough to bake the residue from the exposed gases to form carbon while there is still enough heat maintained to handle the explosive picture effectivály,

-It is the only type of motor that improves with use

While carbon can not form in the combustion chamber, still a pertain amount of the residus from the barat gases works up behind the wide sealing ring in the cylinder head and this building in process obtains, it keepa parking this sealing ring more tightly against the inner sleeve until it sompletely wils the compression chamber developing more power with every mile the motor is drawn.

-It is the only type of motor that wears in while other wears "ont,

All parts

in the Willys Knight car are assembled with wide clearance between each other and oil is forced into these clearances under heavy pressure so that the entire assembly is lapping or wearing in on these heavy films of oil instead of wearing out. In other words, every baaring in this motor is an oil bearing instead of a matad to metal bearing which is necessary in the construction of a poppat valve motor in order to keep it quiet with subsequent quick

wear and noisa.

·

It has eliminated orta hundred and sixty two quick wearing parts necessary in the operation of a cylindarað“ poppet valve motor. There are no hammering parts with a came striking against push rods, push rods agaiżet valve stems, or valve heads suapping back into their seats through this medium of heavy springs, sta
