The London correspondent of the Chicago Tribune says searches for buried treasure have conjured up many weird things, but the story of the rival expedi tions of three nations now maneuvring far out in the North Sea where the old Dutch Linyl Liner Tuang lies in forty fathoms of water, with a big torpedo hole in her rusty side and her hold full cheeses, is the most curious of golden history of the kind for many years. The Tubon's fate was tragic and fantastic at the same time. In 1916, when Germany was badly pressed for raw materials, and with credit running low, it was decided to send 2,000,000-gold marks in bullion to Beenos Ayres to bolster up the credit there. The Durch Lloyd liner Tubratie took on the treasure cargo at Rotterdam, and for safety's sake, because the sea was infested by raiders... the gold ingots were hidden away inside the Dutch cheeses which formed the bulk of the Tuluntin' cargo. The gold ship ment was naturally kept a strict secret, and was known only to the highest Ger man officials. It was almost too secret. in fact, because a German submarinel prowling of the Dutch coast observed the Tubantia" ueting suspiciously, and took pot shot at her, and sank her in-three minutes. One of the German, aganta, aboard, disguised as a lanish merchant, was killed by the explosion; the rest of the crew drifted around in small boats until picked up.
