PARIS FASHION NOTES. THE USES OF CRETONNE

[FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT,' ISABRE RAMSAY.]

Tanis, October 6th. Cretonne, which has long been consider ed as a material to consécrate solely to summer upholsteries and hangings, has new role that of a suddenly found a dress goods. One of the most striking things about the Paris style creators is that all is interesting to them. The alpaca that poor clerks wear for their summer coats is suddenly taken up by the great couturiers and transformed into one of the most fascinating materials for delicious summer suits and dresses. Or leather thongs such as are used to live harness together or splice the great belts that turn the wheels in factories becomes an cabroidery material. Or the leather cost of the English gamekeeper takes on a slight change in line and becomes a smart garment for elegant women to wear. The latest is the use of cretonne for the fabrication of smart summer dresses.

Cretonne is admirably adapted to the smart lines of to-day because it is firm and has a certain amount of rigidity. This is eminently necessary for the creation of smart lines in the straight, unbelted sheath frocks which dominate the line of today's styles, furthermore the large patterns of eretonne lend them. selves admirably to the form of these straight frocks for they do not repeat more than two or three times in the length of a frock. Besides this they are cool to wear and are cool in colour, which is a distinct advantage on a hot day. The great blue, yellow or purple flowers surrounded by green leaves, which make a most familiar pattern in cretonne, also make a delightfully refreshing colour

scheme for the summer dress which is word at ten time or in the hot summer mornings.

Cretoitin, once launched as a material for pretty rummer dresses has supplied a whole new series of ideas to the couturi.

Some have made it into looser coats which can I slipped on over a plain white frock to dress it sufficiently for the street. Many of these conts made further gorgeous by the use of gold or silver thread embroidery. The cretonne is simply stitched over with machine stitching in gold thread. Some times the thread follows and accentuates the outline of the pattern in the cretonne. sometimes it makes serpentine curves all over the eretenne regardless of the pattern. sometimes the background of the cretonne is embroidered with the gold thread, leaving the flower or other prin. ciple pattern of the gretonne to speak for Litself.

Cretonne hats often accompany these cretonne or cretonne-trimmed ccstumes. They can take nay of the forms of the smart bat of to-day. Many trim little cloches are covered with cretonne and neatly banded with a plain black gros- grain ribbon which, with its somber note. seems to give more value to the colours of the bright material. The capelines with their wide drooping brims are even more successful in cretonne as they show off the large patterns to their full value. The home dressmaker will find that mak- Mr & Mrs C. J.
