MEDICINE AND MAGIC.
HOW WE ARE GROWING OUT OF THE BOTTLE STAGE
AN
ELDER BROTHER
[BY A HARLEY STREET DOCTOR.]
A speaker at the recent meeting of the British Medical Association declared that the the average patient still loves "doctor's battle."
Unless his doctor gives him no bottle of medicine he feels that he is not obtain- ing proper treatment. He goes away with a sense of having been cheated of his rights.
There is no doubt whatever that this is true. Whatever doctors may think about drugs and drugging, the public firmly believes, in them."
||
So much so, indeed, that if, to-morrow, all dectors stopped. prescribing their con- sulting rooms would be empty in a week.
We have the clearest possible ideas about the relative merits of the seaside and the country, hills and valleys, dry But when houses and damp, and so on.
it comes to medicines we are not sure. If our favourite pill or potion has failed we go to the docter expecting that his į superior wisdom will produce a better pill or potion.
Thatbottle." when we get it. is a symbol aimest as potent as the ustisnal Asg. It represents in every golden or crimson drop the skill" of the expert. It is the our thing we could not have done for ourselves.
More than that, it is a kind of spell in Auid form. If we swallow it, the malady, the demon, will be driven headlong from our bodies.

There has never probably been any period in which the medical profession Mon. 10 m believed less in drugs than if does to- day.
Yet this fact must be state because it is of vital importance that the public should realise that healing comes from outward agencies but from Nature Thur. 13 m 10 44 herself.

That is why, to-day, the whole medical profession is busying itself with health- culture rather than with disease cure. The modern aim is to put a mac into training against his besetting ailment.
That, however, means rousing him up to an active share in his treatment. It means imposing restrictions on his free- don to eat and drink what he likes. It means bothering him to take exercise and keep regular hours.

But the day of the bottle is passing, nevertheless. The younger generation of patients are actually beginning to aneer at it. They know that medical men use among themselves the word placebe," and that a placebe is a bottle of coloured water with a bad taste, the object of which is to satisfy ignorant or stupid people.
Gradually, therefore, we shall outgrow the "bottle stage" in scientific sense just as we outgrow it individually in our Durseries. That will be the biggest for ward movement ever accomplished in the history of medicine.
For it will mean that 'men and women have taken up the burdens of their own health and developed at last a bealth conscience."

"LIFE SAVED BY A MORSE CALL.
THEEE WEEKS' TRANCÈ ENDED... Widespread interest has been aroused in scientific circles in Canada by the novel and successful method used to restore a telegraph superintendent to consciousness after he had Jain in a state of trance for three weeks.
Mr. J. T. Phelan, the superintendent of the Government telegraph wires at Dawson, Yukon, had been seriously ill, and gradually relapsed into unconscious ness from which all attempts to rouse him had failed, the
It was thought after the first few days that the coma would pass off, but the days lengthened into weeks, and it was feared that he would die without regain ing consciousness
His daughter, who nursed him during the illness, then hit on the happy iden of using the telegraph instrument and tapping out her father's call. geg

Big crowd attended on Saturday and Sunday, both to the Matince and evening performance at the Queen's Theatre. A sprightly young American comedienne with an engaging personality, Miss Bossie Lester, made her first appearance and achieved a veritable triumph, the ap- plause being almost overwhelming after each of her contributions.: Miss Leter was required to respond to insistent re- calls. Her work is unique and clever. She sings superbly both straight and character songs, and puts over quite a lot of funny gags, so is bound to please. To-might will be her farewell perform ences in a new repertoire of dialect.songs and stories. On the same program10 will shown the Metro feature "The Face Between featuring Sylvia. Breamer.

Constance Talmadge came to the World Theatre on Sunday in the role of Helen-Drayton, the young girl wife of
The Losson," a select production, in which she is presented by Lewis J. Solanick. The picture was director by Charles Giblyn and is a screen version of the well-anowa tales of marticu life by Virgina Teraune Van de Waver. Toe Heen Drayton of The Lesson" reveals Constance. Tammadge in one of the most pleasing and authentic caracterizations of her career, since it is just the type of Regular American Girl" to which this captivating screen star naturally belongs. The story concerns a young girl in & small town, who marries a city man, principally because she is tired of seeing the same old faces and dancing with the same old boys year after year. Her marriage is not a happy one, but she dis- covers she has talents which enable her to make her way independently, and eventually she finds happiness as well. The supporting east has been selected with great care, and includes the popular Tom Moore as leading man, Herbert Hoyes, Walter Hiers, Joseph Sinily, Llliam Rambesu, Dorothy Green, Christy Walker, and others.
