CHINA AMATEUR GOLF
CHAMPIONSHIP..
-PLAYERS BAD ATTACK OF
NERVES.
(BY JOHN LOFTING IN THE ** N.-C. DAILY NEWS."}
This event was played for the first time in China over the week-end. It was decided by medal play of 12 holes as are the open championships of Great Britain and the United States. The champion- ship was won by J. B. Ferrier who bad scores of 77, 79, 73 and 78
The morning round yesterday apart, these scores are not so good as Ferrier's present form, but as he remarked in a short speech, after receiving the cup, 72 holes medal play is a great strain for amateur players, and nerves play a greater part in the gume they should be allowed to assume.
יו
The short game is where strokes are lost and this is where nervous caxiety plays its worst havoc. All competitors suffered to a greater or a lesser extent on this account. On the first day the scores were not as low as was expected and the reason appeared to me that most of the competitors found the putting very difficult. The reason must have been, a psychological ano. The greens were in excellent condition. But player after player returned to the club-house deplor ing the number of holes at which three putts had been required. Some, indeed, bewailed a few four-putt holings. And there was one case of a first-class player from Hongkong who, after being on the fourth green, in two strokes, eventually holed out in 3! This player finished the first round in 83; if he had only controll- ed the ball at the fourth hole he would bave shared the third place at tin-time on Saturday. The best score for the first round was that of Ferguson, of Hong kong. who returned a 75. Ferrier and Budd each bad 77, and Peebles hnd 75 Peebies was one of the players who lost many strokes on the greens and his score for the morning round should have been strokes better. Eo was partnered with Shewan, the young long hitter of Hong kong, who was the unfortunate compiler of the nine at the fourth.
After Peeble's card came six 70's of which the most dangerous, from the golf
