COMPANY MEETING. DOUGLAS STEAMSHIP CO... LTD.

An Extraordinary General Meeting of the Douglas Steamship Co., Ltd., was held yesterday at noon at the offices of the Company, 20, Des Voeux Road Cen-" tral Mr. A. H. White presided and those present were: Messrs. W. E. Clark, C. G. Mackie and B. D. F. Beith (Dirce tora), Mr. C. I. Farmer (Secretary), Mr. W. E. L Sbenton (Solicitor to the Com- pany) and the following shareholders: Messrs. Chan Tong, Chua Wing Ken and S. T. Williamson.

The Secretary having read the notice convening the meeting.

A

The CHAIRMAN, said:-The object for which this meeting has been calict is, as indicated in the Notice which the Secre- tary has just rend, for the purpose of receiving a report of the proceedings at the First Extraordinary General Meeting held on the 19th ult., and of confirming,. if thought fit, as a Special Resolution the Resolution which was passed as an Extra- ordinary Resolution at such First Meot- ing That Resolution, as you will remen- ber, concerned the approval of the draft new Articles of Association of the Com- pany,

THEATRE

You will also remember that at the above mentioned First Meeting it was. shortly explained to you why your Con- sulting Committee thought it essential to alter the Articles of "Association, and I do not consider it necessary to deal fur- ther therewith, except to add that at the Meeting in question the draft new Articles of Association were unanimously approved," and that a Resolution record- ing such, approval was unanimously pass- ed as an Extraordinary Resolution. Under the Hongkong Companies Ordia. ance, however, it is necessary "that the approval of the new Articles of Associa tion shall be signified by Special Resolu- tion, and consequently, this Meeting has been convened for the purpose of enabling the Extraordinary Resolution above re ferred to, to be confirmed as a Special Resolution. And I accordingly "beg to propose the confirmation as a Special Resolution of the said Extraordinary FRIDAY, Resolution, namely: —

That the new Articles already ap- proved by this Meeting and for the pur pose of identification subscribed by the Chairman thereof be and the same are hereby adopted as the Articles of the Company to the exclusion of and in substitution for all the existing Articles thereof." and I shall be glad if some shareholder will kindly second that...

Mr. SAT WILLIAMSON seconded, and the relation was carried unanimously.

Promoting Happiness

I'm always happy, sir, and when you're happy yourself you promote the happiness of others. I'm happy because I bring happiness-in the form of Kensitas-into the lives of all smokers of discrimination and taste, like yourself, sir. You know as I always say "There's only one thing as good as a Kensitas, and that is another Kensitas."

settle the fate of the exhibition Failing an announcement this week it may be understood that the exhibition will close on November 1st.

If it is decided to continue the ex- hibition it will not be necessary, it was semi-officially stated yesterday, to call upon the guaruators to make good the loss which is now recognised as inevitable on this year's working. What that lose 1s cannot be finally ascertained until all the exhibition accounts are dealt with, and it is thought that cannot be until February or March of next year. A con servative estimate, however, places the adverse balance at £1,000,000.

CARRYING IT FORWARD.

If the exhibition re-opens next year that sum will be carried forward and fresh or additional guarantees will not be called for. Only in the event of the receipts of the exhibition next year feil. ing to wipe out the deficit on this year's working and pay its current expenses will the guarantora by lled upon. "So far," said one of the principal guarantors, we have received no inti- mation that we are to be called upon for our guarantees, bat we fully expect it Only a decision to re-open the exhibition can postpone and, in my opinion, per baps eliminate the necessity for a call. You can be sure that the guarantors will all be in favour of a continuance of the exhibition, fur, if they have to pay, naturally they will like to postpone the evil day as long as possible."

basis of this formula rests on the assump tion that the Royal Dutch dividend will be reduced by ડ cent. because of the increased capital. But it is explained that a true relative value can only be obtained by a comparison of the yields of each company at the time of the final distributions. Present yield of the two comes out at the same-7 per cent. less tar.

CHINESE FINANCE CLUBS.

Finance, as conducted by Quang Lung, a Chinese laundryman, of Pitt Street, Liverpool, provided a problem for the Registrar in the Liverpool. Bankrupter Court..

Quong, explaining how money, in a club which he organised went to those who offered the highest interest, said, "We submit a day for the draw, all the ten- bers have a draw. All the money is offered, and all the members come and write a note. Who offers the highest in- tereat, he gets the money. He told the Court that he had lost heavily nt fan-tan and puk-a-pu...

This sort of club is very common m Hongkong.

THE RUBBER POSITION.

In the "World's Rubber Position" for September, it is stated that allowing for the

Standard Production "...being reduced to 10 per cent. for the quarter commencing November 1st, the averag export for 1224 will be a fraction over 67 per cent With rubber averaging over is. 3d. and under Is. Od. for the whole of next year (1025), the average export.por- mitted will be practically 61 per cent.; with rubber 18. éd. per ibi or over for the same period the percentage would be Learly 72 per cent. It is also noted in of plantation rubber to the end of August the same publication that the shipments show a decrease of about 1,603 tone, and the world's shipments from producing countries, a decrease of about 150 tons as compared with the same period of 1923.
