There is a good demand for Investment stocks, and shares of a more speculative nature are hardening, resulting in a larger volume of business.

Latest reporta from the Straits indicate that the Rubber market continues netive. The rise in the raw material has also "brought about a strong demand for shares in Shanghai, and prices there have ad- vanced considerably.

SIR A BALFOUR AND STRIKES.

Sir Arthur Balfour, chairman of the Goverüment Committee of Industry and Trade, wag entertained at luncheon re- gently, by his fellow members of the Shef- field Chamber of Commerce. He said that in the first eight months of the year we lost nearly 8,000,000 working days in strikes and delays of one kind and another. He which took place, at Downing Street were WAR certain that national settlements influenced by voting, and questions of that kind were seldom, if ever, economic settlements that the country could afford, Was there ever greater lunacy perpetrat ed in this world than to talk about shortening hours to-day, when what we must have was production if we were going to carry on our export trade-

LEAGUE OF NATIONS AND SECURITY PACT.

THE ADOPTION OF THE PROTUCOL"

resolution recommending the res petive (lovernments which are members of the League of Nations to sign and ratify the draft" Protocol for the Pacific Settlement of international Dis putes, and recommending that a Dis armament Conference shall be called was unanimously adopted at the closing mert ing of the Fifth Assembly of the League. Out of fifty-four States which belong to the league forty-seven were represented at the meeting, and there were no dis Benlient votes and no abstentions.

The passage of this resolution by the Assembly is, however, one thing. Its signature by the various Governments is another. So far, down to the time of its adoption by the Assembly (October 2nd) only ten State's had actually appended their signatures to the document. These

Latvia, Grecce, Portugal, Jugoslavia, Czechoslovakia.

It will be observed that with the ex- ception of Franes none of these signa- |tories' is a first-class Power. Even in the case of France, M. Briand seade certain minor reservations. In the "case of the Netherlands. according to a Reuter tele gram from The Hague, although the Pro- tocol is regarded as marking an import- ant advanes, the Dutch Government deems it advisable, in" view of certain poïnia, to reserve the right to consider the document further before finally ac cepting it."

fied that we had to get Russia, into a totally different condition before we could offer her the privileges of the British Empire. Russians came here. formed their companies in London, had the same legal redress that we had, and in return they offered us nothing at all. Under these conditions, for us to guaran- tee a loan to place in the hands of the Russians the power at any moment to de- fault and throw on the British taxpayers the payment of interest was a ridiculous proposition, and he hoped it would not be pursued.

We wanted to see the boys and girls' of this country living more in their bones and having more time for reading, reflec tion, and self-education. At present they were living in the streets, dancing halls, and outside their own homes. They were in very excited state, and were not giving enough time to train themselves for the work they were doing. They did not realise as they ought to that the one occupation which one could go on following through life without getting

bored was work.

DON'T MISS YOUR LAST CHANCE. THE WORLD'S GREATEST SCREEN STARS Į. MOZUKIN & N. LESIENKO

THEIR LATEST 1924'8 MOST MAGNIFICENT PRODUCTION

"KEAN"

or (GENIUS AND DISORDER)

ADAPTED FROM ALEX, DUMAS' CELEBRATED MASTERPIECE. There are few persons who haven't read and bold in sentimental regard Alex. Damza' strongest masterwork "KEAN" known the world over. It is a powerfully dramatic tale, relating the life and unhappy ending of Edmund Kean, whom the critics and public alike kailed not only as Britain's foremost actor of that period, but as one of the greatest dramatic genius of all time.

IT IS A PICTURE OF LOVE AND DESPAIR, OF DREAMS AND ASHES OF DREAMS. A PICTURE THAT WILL GRIP AND HOLD THE POIGNANT APPEAL WHICH WILL REACH-DEEPLY INTO EVERY HUMAN HEART. IT IS A LIVING BREATHING DOCUMENT OF REAL LIFE...

Mr. MOZUKIN, Europe's greatest setor en the server, assisted br an exceptionally talented cast, comprising N. Lesienko & Nic. Koline, is enacting a role of heavy dramatic exactions, and he succeeds in registering almost the entire gamut of emotions in a manner of each certainty that his work in KBAN touches probably the uppermaest point of the dramatic attainment of his

career.
