BORNEO QUESTIONS.

· TRADING - CONDITIONS,

The Hon. Mr. F. W. Pinnock, Chairman of the North Bornea Chamber of Com meree, in the course of a speech at the recent annual meeting made the follow- ing remarks:-*

Shipping-The question of the exist ing freight rates on cargo has received the constant attention of your Committee and some small reductions, were an out- come of the representations made. We are still of opinion, however, the existing high rates tend to handicap trade, and we hope the Shipping Companies will con- tinue their offorts to reduce running costs so as to still further reduce freights. Complaints were also made in regard so the rationing of deck passengers, and in this also some improvement has recently been effected.

Agriculture. The Chamber being "ap- preciative of the bencfts derived from periodical visits of inspection to Estates by the Government Mycologist have sug- gested more frequent visits and an amend meat of the existing scale of ices so as to bring the Mycologist's services within the reach of small agriculturists, which would ultimately be to the benefit of the industry generally.

Rubber Industry.-The trade of the territory is to no smal degree dependent upon the success or otherwise of the Rub- bor industry. During the year under ro view there has been much price fluctua- tion in the Rubber market, quotations varying from cents to 85 cents per lb. We have nad waves of pessimism and but small ripples only of anything in the nature of optimism, but we hope and be Lieve the worst has passed. The volun- tary scheme of restriction, based on the Stevenson Scheme, has operated through- out the year and, although there are some who urge the abolishment of restriction, I think I am speaking on behalf of the majority of the Planting Community in Borneo, when I say we are fully appre- ciative of the fact that the Restriction Scheme has not only given us time to take a breather, but it has undoubtedly done more than that and saved an im- portant local industry. At this time, the market is. brighter, and we hope the re- cent price increase will continue until it reaches a figure which makes production profitable. We feel sure that any serious interference with restriction will bring with it a low parity of precis which few Borneo Estates will be able to withstand for any length of time.

."

General-Trading conditions have been difficult owing to the depressed state of agriculture and markets generally. 1 need not stress this fact because it is obvious to all of us. Speculation about the future is difficult and rarely success- ful, but, if I may indulge a little, I think present indications serve to sbow in

The proved times should be ahead of us. European situation seems to be clearing, and the political position in China, a country we are so dependent upon for marketing timber and produce, seems to be fast approaching a stage where a deci sion one way or the other must soon be reached. When this is accomplished should at once reflect itself beneficially upon the movement of exports from this country.

WORKING-CLASS CAPIT- ALISTS.

SAVINGS DOUBLED IN 14 YEARS. Some remarkable figures showing the growth of thrift, partiularly amongst the working-classes, were given by Sir Kingsley Wood, M.P., in an address be fore the Faculty, of Insurance at Shef- field on September 18th. Thrift, he said, was still one of the best British qualities, and, notwithstanding difficult times," workers were still steadily making pro vision

In support of this he instanced how in 1999 over £81,000,000 were paid into the Post Office Savings Banks in England and Wales, and there were actually due to the depositors at the end of the year over £244,000,000. Those figures were in striking contrast to those of 1909, when some £10,000,000 were paid in, and mere were £143,000,000 credit. Over 10,000,000 the people had counts there to-day, average amount due to each "capitalist" being £22 188 In Scotland, which was generally credited with being a thrifty place, there were 560,000 depositors, but the average sum deposited was only £16 10s. 3d. In the United Kingdom alto- gether there was over £29,000,000 so de- posited by the working-classes. In the trustees savings banks there was a fur- thor sum of £75,000,000.

Another astonishing pieco of evidenc was that there wero no less than £200,000,000 worth of Government securi ties standing in the Post Office Savings Banks to the credit of bolders at the end of 1922. Sir Kingsley Wood said when ho noted these figures he thought there was still some hope for the mpitalistic system in this country, and that some of its biggest and best supporters were Quemselves. Another noteworthy and en- workers properly amongst the

the provision made couraging sign was by workers to own their own houses and thus have a stake in the country. In 1920 building societies had £84,000,000 worth of assets, and last year some £30,000,000 were advanced for house pur chase purposes, and more than 250,000 persons to-day were purchasing property through those societies.

The total share capital of the members of the industrial and provident societies. was some £55,000,000, whilst 276,000,000 bad been paid last year by way of pre- mium to the life assurance companies. In fact, in this latter connection, the only sign of any lack of progress at all was the life assurances transacted through the Post Office, which in 1922 was only able to secure 241 contracts All those were most encouraging aigns of the times. All projected legislation should be carefully watched which might damage the great thrift institutions of the country or de- feat a movement which added so much to the stability of the country.

Hope or Curiosity

I think sometimes the word "curiosity is just another name for "hope."

You might fancy that it was curiosity that made you smoke your first Kensitas-ng, sir, it was really hope, the hope that you would find Kensitas a really good cigarette, better than the kind you had been smoking.

But it is a fact, sir, that after you smoked that first Kensitas and experienced the cool, rare old blend of prime Virginia. you continued to smoke Kensitas, because you found that Kensitas are...

"as good as really good cigarettes

can be."

The Day of the Knight is Here !

IT IS THE

WILLYS KNIGHT

-

Simplest and most trouble-free type of motor ever invented.

It has the most distnctive and gracefully balanced body of any car

in the market.

1.-The Willys-Knight car is the four cylinder motored car that makes the six

unnecessary,

The Knight motor is steam principle. The valvos me two cylindrical aloeven with rectangular slots or ports which when they register with each other and the ports in the block allow the ingress and egress of the gason without abstraction. These wide open passages, particularly on the exhaust side; permit a more thorough cleaning of the barnt gases from the combustion chamber than any other type of motor, so that every unsos of energy munilable in utilized from the explosive mixture, which gives us such tremendous power

It has no valve to grind and no carbon to clean.

The combustion chamber is completely surrounded by water and an alloy piston noted for its great t radiating qualities is used so neither the combustion chamber nor the head of the piston gets hot enough to bake the residue from the exposed gason to form carbon while there is still enough hest maintained to handia the explosive mixture effectively.

-It is the only type of motor that improves with use.

While carbon can not forul in the combustion chamber, still certain amount of the residue from the buraf gases works up behind the wide sealing ring in the sylinder head and we this building in process obtains, it keeps pushing this sealing ring more tightly against the inner ïleeve until it completely win the compression chamber developing more power with every mile the motor is drawn.

»

4-It is the only type of motor that wears in while other wears out.

All parts in the Willys-Knight car are assembled with wide clear made between each other and oil is forced into these clearancos under heavy pressure so that the entire assembly is lapping or wearing in on these heavy fims of oil instead of wearing oat. In other words, every bearing in this motor is an cal bearing instead of a metal to matal bearing which is necessary in the construction of a poppet valve motor in order to keep it quiet with subsequent quisk wear and noise.

It has eliminated one hundred, sad sixty two quick wearing parts necessary in the operation of a sylindered poppet valve motor. There are no hammering parts such as cams striking against push roda, push rods against valva riems, or raire heads snapping back into their sents through the mediam of heavy springs, eto,
