some of the usen in the world to which Arthur the club could be put. Undoubtedly Mr the first thing which the members of the she club should set about doing, said, was to enlighten their fellow basi- ness women, as well As the general public, in their ignorance regarding the various professions which women were following today. Had she not been a member of the Boroptimist Club she ber- self would never have known that there was such a person as a woman stock. broker. She had also recently heard that the Royal Society had chosen a woman for appointment for a fellowship in metallurgy as £500 a year. These were two of f many cases in which a woman was doing, and doing well, a man's work. It was hard to impress upon the public the fact that work, because it happened to be done by a woman, was by no means "second best or." shoddy."

A woman who happened to possess an extremely logical mind was generally spoken of as baving a masculine brain" whereas the man with the illogical mind was called "effeminate. This was the sort of thing the Soroptimists, could do a great deal towards overcoming.

Lady Barrett suggested, that members of the club should get into touch with younger girls who were about to enter business, and give them some useful advice regarding the various professions which they of the younger generation proposed following. Such advice, gained through past experience, would be, wel-Dr. Douglas R. Gawler comed by all newcomers,

Kathleen Viscountess Falmouth, who presided, said this auggestion of La Barrett's would be fully considered by

the directors of the club' at their next meeting.

AN UGLY FASHION. WOMEN TO HIDE THEIR FACES.

A woman correspondent, writing in a London paper says:-

Faceless women will be seen in the coming winter when the new coats with high fur collars make their appearance. The collars reach almost to the eyes of the wearers of the coats. The new high- crowned small bats are pulled so well over the head that their downturned brims hide the eyes.

The advantage of this style is that this winter delicate complexions will be ade quately protected from the cutting winds. Curiously enough, the back and the front view of a "fareless" woman seem almost identical, especially in one of the sheath-like wraps moulding the fashionable slim figure which is without contours.

MANY DIVORCE SUITS. LONGEST LIST FOR THREE YEARS.

The first 340 of the undefended suits to come before the Divorce Court during the coming term and the first 130 of the de- fended suits were posted at Somerset House last month. A remarkable feature. is the number of cases in which the King's Proctor is intervening.

THE ART OF THE DROPPED "H."

MR. THOMAS'S "ARTISTIC.

TOUCH."

Mrs. Sidney Webb, wife of the President of the Board of Trade, writes a monthly political letter for the benefit of women olectors in her husband's constituency the Beaba division of Durham... In her latest contribution she dwells on the vir tues of leading members of the Labour Socialist Government, and there is one passage, at least, that is well worth quot ing:

Mr. J. H. Thomas, the Secretary of State for the Colonies, and therefore the guardian of Irish interests, plays fection," says Mrs. Webb, the part of the plain British workman, who has be come by sheer will power and brilliant intellectual gifts a lending statesman in the British Commonwealth of free nations. The last artistic touch. I may observe in passing, like the red rouge of a star actress's lips, is the deliberately persistent dropping of his h's, which adds style to his shrewd and witty speeches.
