This was a good match throughout, Both men playing up to a high standard, but what was actually the outstanding contest of the day was that between Messrs. A. H. Ferguson (Hongkong) and Few (Manila). The former began by doing each of the first eight holes in bogey, but he was only able to win four of them, the other four being halved, Few, playing really admirable golf, took the long ninth, and at this point was three down to his British opponent.
Ferguson played the 12th, 14th, 15th, and 10th in one under bogey, and won three of them, the 15th being balved. A the end of the first round. At one hole, a singularly sensational stroke was played by Ferguson in winning it. Few had, by great bad luck, missed a long putt, leaving his hall on the lip of the hole and almost, but not quite, a stymie for his opponent. Ferguson looked carefully along the "line," and played a beautiful shot which went, as billiard players would say, "in off" Few's ball, "and gave him the hole.
A very close game was seen between Messra Mitchell and Read, the 38th hole being halved, after the players had been all square at the 35th. At no period of the game did either man hold a lead of any consequence, and the dogged charec ter of the struggle will be gathered from the following table:

In the fielding, a good many players
hit slowly towards them. This was ruther noticeable as was a certain lack of back- up. The one certainty about the Inter- port Match is that no one who in lazy ia the acki is going to get in. Whereas I know one or two people who have almost a claim to be played for their field- ing alode. A run saved is a man made.
