SERICULTURE IN KWANGTUNG.

The sericulture industry of Kwangtang province is passing through a very critical period of its development, says, the Lingnam Agricultural Rericus Cantos. In years past there has usually been a very brisk trade in Canton silk. During the war there was an increased demand in spite of the fact that there were many complaints as to the inferior quality turn- ed out by our flatures. Early this year however, Canton received cable advice | from "America that Canton silk was great- ly in disfavour, .primarily because of our poor realing methods, and that the de- and this year would he slight. This caused a panic on the local silk markets and for a time there was much discussion as to the situation. In some quarters American, merchants were blamed for the unusually high prices which obtained läst year and for the fact that all too often they pay the same price for poor quality"! as for good quality silk. False rumours were intensided until it was actually ra. ported that the United States had pro- hibited by law the entry of Canton silk. The result of all this was that for the first crops this year there was a terrible alump in the industry. At the opening of the year it was reported, quite nuthoritative- ly, that in Shuntak district, where there are nearly 200 latures, employing. 60,000 women and girl inbourers, about two- thirds of these were forced to suspend operations.

At this waiting three of the six crops produced each year have been completed. The latest reports of the market for Can- ton raw silk indicate that the price has risen to $1,100 to $1,300 per picul, but that buying is very slow at even lower prices. Very few orders coming through from. America This low price for raw silk is still holding down the prices offered for coccous, with the result that many farmers are attempting to go into rice culture or vegetable growing instead of silk worm rearing. The ogg markets for the fourth crop gave a clear indication of the state of mind of the farmers. In some cases egg sheets were aelling as low as twenty cents for nine sheets. Many egg merchants were forced to throw their catire output into the river as they could not sell at any price. The low condition of the "market was still Fürther accentuated at this time by the severe floods which covered the Shuntak, Heungshan, and Namhoi districts, and by the presence of an epidemic of "mo chung the larva of a tussock moth " (Farthesia similis), which had destroyed 50 per cent of the mulberry leaves.

The Sericulture Department of the Lingnam Agricultural College, Canton, is this year coatinuing its efforts in the dis- tribution and sale of disease-free silk- worm eggs. The department bas, pro- duced during the past fiscal year 2,180 commercial sheets of silkworm eggs and 44,581 inspected bircles of eggs. For the production of these we have produced on our own farm about half of the mulberry leaves required Work has been begun upon the Eugene Atwood Reeling Labora tory, a building badly beedel for a long tinie and now made possible through the generosity of Mr. Eugene Atwood of the Atwood Machine Company, Stonington, Connecticut. In this building there will be installed a cold storage plant, the 'gift of Mr. Edward E Bradley of the same company.

FOREIGN FIRMS IN SHANGHAI.

A list of foreign firms is contained in the Shanghai Customs Returns for 1993 No figures are available for Chinese firms, says Mr. L. A. Lyall, Commissioner of Customs, but it is possible that they have increased even more extensively in the past eight or ten years than foreign firms:

Hope or Curiosity

I think sometimes the word "curiosity is just another name for hope." You might fancy that it was curiosity that made

you smoke your first Kensitas-no, sir, it was really hope, the hope that you would find Kensitas a really good cigarette, better than the kind you had been smoking.

But it is a fact, air, that after you smoked that first Kensitas and experienced the cool, rare old blend of prime Virginia you continued to smoke Kensitas, because you found that Kensitas are

as good as really good cigarettes can be."

The Day of the Knight is Here !

IT IS THE

WILLYS KNIGHT

Simplest and most trouble-free type of motor ever invented.

It has the most distnctive and gracefully balanced body of any car

in the market

1.

1-The Willys-Knight car is the four cylinder motore car that makes the six

nnnecessary.

The Knight motor is steam prinsipla. The valve me two cylindrical sleeves with rectangular sluts or porta which when they register with each other and the parts in the block allow the ingress and egress of the gasen without obatraction. These wide open passages, particularly on the arhaust side, permit a more thorough cleaning of the burit gases from the combustion chamber than any other type of mator, so that pray ounce of energy available is utilized from the explosive mixture, which gives us such tremendous power

2-It has no valve to drind and no carbon to clean,

The combustion chamber is completely surrounded by water and an alloy piston noted for its grast hem! radiating qualities is used so neither the combustion chamber nor the head of the piston gets hot enough to baka the residue from the exposed green to form carbon while there is still enough heat mainisined to handle the explosive mixture effectively.

-It is the only type of motor that improves with use.

While carbon can not form in the combustion chamber, still a certain amount of the residue from the burnt gasse works up behind the wide sealing ring in the cylinder head and, se taie building in process obtains, it koepe pashing this sealing ring more tightly against the inner sleeve until it completely as the compression chamber developing more power with every mile the motor is drawn.

4-It is the only type of motor that wears in while other wears out.

All parts in the Willys-Knight car are assembled with wide clearance between each other and oil is forced into these clearances under heary pressure that the entire assembly is lapping or waring in on these heavy filma o oil instead of wearing out. In other words, every bearing in this motor is an oil bearing instead of a metal to metal bearing which is necessary in the construction of a poppet valva motor in order to keep it quiet with subsequent quick wear and noise...

It has eliminated one hundred and sixty two quick wearing parts necessary in the operation of a sylindered poppet valve motor. There are no hammering parts such as cams striking against push rods, push rods against Talve stems, or valve heads suspping back into their seats through the medium of heavy springa; atu.
