MEDICINE AND MAGIC. VISITORS AT HOTELS

HOW WE ARE GROWING OUT OF }-

THE ROTTLE STAGE.

A Harley Street Doctor writes in a home paper as follows:-

A speaker at the recent weeting of the British Medical Association declared that the average patient still loves the

doctor's bottle."" Unless his doctor gives hith a bottle of medicine he feels that he is not obtaining proper treatment. He goes away with a sense of having been cheated of his rights. There is no doubt whatever that this is true, Whatever doctors may think about drugs and dragging, the public Braly believes in them. So much so, indeed; that ite to-morrow, all doctors stopped prescribing their consulting rooms would be empty in a week.

We have the clearest possible ideas about the relative merits of the seaside and the country, hills and valleys, dry. bouses and damp, and so on. But when it comes to medicines we are not sure.. If our favourite pill or potion has failed we go to the doctor expecting that his superior wisdom will procure # hettez pill or potion,

14

That bottle," when we get it, in a symbol almost as potent as the national tlag. It represents in every golden er erinon drop the skill of the expert. It is the one thing we could not have done for ourselves. More than that, it is a kind of spell in faid form: If we swallow it, the malady, the demon, will De driven headlong from our bodies.

Thus we swallow it as a rule in great Caith, noting its horrible taste with sense of grim plegare. The taste is not fur us, but for the evil spirit which is sure to be alarmed or nauseated thereby. There is so much to be said for this! point of view that it seems almost, unkind to emphasise the fact that doctors them, Enclves take very little medicine, There has never probably been any period in which the medical profession believe less in drugs than it does to-day. Yet this fact most be stated because it is of vital importancy that we public should realise that healing.comes not from out. C. Minim ward agencies but from Nature herself. The very uion that any drug can possibly do is to help Nature to help herself. And Nature as a rule works better without these artificial stimulants. Her tonic are the sunlight and the open air, exer- cise, abstemiousness, the zest and interest of life.

That is way, to-day, the whole medical Mr & Mrs A. E professor is busying itself with health- culture rather than with disease cure. The modern aim is to put an into training against his besetting ailment.

That, however, means rousing him up to an active share in his treatinget. means imposing restrictions on his frer. dom to cat and drink what he like It means bothering him to take exirce and keep regular hours. Human nature re- sents such interferences.

Boarse and that a placebo-is a bottle of coloured Mr M. J. Bren water with a bad taste, the object of which is to satisfy ignorant or stupid people.

Gradually, therefore, we shall outgrow the bottle-stage in a scientific sense, just as we outgrow it individually in our nurseries. That will be the "biggest for- ward movement ever accomplished in the history of medicine.

For it will mean that men women have taken up the burdens of their own health and developed at last a health conscience." The dactor in ese days will represent not a priest, dispensing -miracles, but an "elder brother" helping with advice. That is the proper work of the modern doctor. It is the work he wishes. in his heart to undertake. It is the work which is bound to yield a rich barvest in health and happiness..

Mr. Stevens was elected Mayor of Nairobi in 1020. He relates this amazing adventure with lions in East Africa:

"

In 1913, Postma. a young Dutchman. was travelling by night with an empty wagon and sixteen oxen. Without be ing aware of the fact, he was being fol- lowed for quite a long time just before daybreak by a large family of nine lions -father,

mother, and seven nearly full- grown cubs.

No sooner had he “outspanned - the oxen, and they were busy grazing scar the wagon, when, down camg the troop of lions, and in less time than it takes to write these lines, they all set on to the leading ox, pulled him down, Eilled him, and commenced their early break fast.

LIONS YOO BUSY.

Postie was alone, except for the two natives, Walking to the wagon, he took down his small sporting Lee-Metford from its peg and quietly approached the lions till near enough to shoot with accuracy.

"The lions were too busy to take the least notice of him, and one by one, as they sat on the dead ox, eating his hut- tooks, he drew a bead on each of them in turn, and each one rolled over stone dead, with a bullet through his vitals, and; strangest thing of all, the
