The figures quoted above have given the greatest satisfaction in the Lancashire cotton trade. Mr. Harry Dixon, di Oldham, bead of the "Dixon group of over 90 cotton mills, said to a reporter: The report is splendid news for Lan cashire, for it brings an imminent pros pect of cotton at isa lb., which is ret garded by Lancashire as a solid founda. tion for trade. Already the cotton trade is very much better in every department. How far cotton will go down in price

on the world demand, but the opinion of Lancashire is that the demand will not be such as to exceed the crop. Europe is not yet quite ready.

There is now every prospect of in- creased working hours in the Lancashire trade. The testing time wil be in October and November, when the full force of the world demand will be experienced. Per- sonally, I think full-time working is a long way ahead, but I am quite sanguine that a revision of short-time now ruling will come very soon.")

In a cablegram (dated Houston, Texas, August ist) to the Federation of Master Cotton Spinners' Associations, Mr. Arno

who is touring the cotton States, says:

A LEEDS CENTENARY. THE STONEMASON INVENTOR OF PORTLAND CEMENT.

A hundred years ago a Leeds stone- mason, named Joseph Aspdin, invented and patented Portland cement, and the centenary of the invention is to be mark ed by the erection of a memorial in the Leeds Town Hall.

This memorial, which will be an inscrib ed bronze tablet, has been presented to the city by the American Portland Cement Manufacturers Association. The pre- sident, Mr. F. W. Kelly, and representa- tive inembers of the Association have. recently been visiting the Wembley Ex- hibition, and after gazing with námíta of con they

Aspdin was a journeyman stonemason in Leeds, and when he patented his in- vention in 1824 he was forty-five years of ago. In the following year he left Leeds and established factory at Wakefield. He died in 1855 at the age of seventy-six. And was buried at St. John's Church,
