£500 CARPET COAT. „VISITORS AT HOTELS SPECIMEN OF A DEAD INDIAN

ART AT WEMBLEY.

Roses

|

The West is inclined to look upon the carpet as a thing to be used only on the floor, but from the United Provinces of Agra and Outh. in Northern India, has come to the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley a wonderful coat, wrought as a delicate carpet is wrought, with 900 to 1,100 kuotas per square "inch.

leaves are interwoven with and rose deliente floral designs in various tints. Made for an Indian Prince sone eighty years ago, this coat is the only remain ing sample of an art that is now lost

It was the boast of Indian Kings in former days to maintain skilled artizans and craftsman in their service, with no stated hours of work, but with the dis. rinet understanding that their work must. be unrivalled. But since the Mutiny, this custon seems to be disappearing, so that many a remarkable talent can only be known today by the rare works of art preserved in the various state Toshikhathas (Treasuries). But there are no, artists to carry on the traditions.

The warp and woot in the making of this coat is silk, while the hugis is the famons Pasmina " wool from Kash- mir. It is valued at £500, but nu amount of money can create another one in India -the art is dead and gone. "But in ordi- nary carpels Agra competes" favourably with Persian output. while thus from Mirzapur are cheap and durable,

The United Provinces section is con sidered to be the most successful in datilg business outplit, almost 50 per cent. of the takings in the Indian Pavilion havi ing been the result of this court alone.

Along the Western wall of this court are arranged banting trophies, which have been lent by His Majesty the King. There is oor tiger skin-considered to be the largest yet obtained, a trophy of the Lord Reading. A gigantic pair of elephant's tusks ft. in. long weigh ing 184 lbs each, a present from the Maharaja of Nepaul to the King, is also an exhibit which attracts aniversal at tention.

America. Canada, Bermuda. Copen: bagia, Scandinavia, Brussels. "Amster- dan, Spain. have actually done actual business worth over £30,000, and en quiries have been received from all ovel the world.

DEFYING THE SEASON, CROWDED. LONDON BALLROOMS.

The West End of London on any of these August nights, writes 21 woman correspondent, is astonishingly brilliant and fashionable-apd really 11: caso able.

Night after night the three or four London hallrooms de luxe are filled with a well-dressed, lavishly splending throng. You see in plenty the exquisite people. the people for whom the "seasons really made-unashamedly outraging the limits that were set for them. Two years ngo they would have accounted for their presence, with the story of a hurried recall to town nowadays they ask you out to dinner next.

One reason for this is that so man London people went gut of town during the congestion the real season that they are now back in London.

Suppers, have inapt into great favour during the last few weeks. Visitors particularly Amerleans-had our dinner time is late for the London thentres, anvi they bave done much to spread the supper habit.

Just before the War several insurance companies revised their mortality tables, and in 1919 the cost of Government | Miss 0. C. Jenkins.". annuities was raised from 3 to 6 per cent. As rates of interest were not jumpy, as they have been since the War, this increase was due solely to the act that people were living longer.

Big insurance companies also have had to increase the cost of their annuities since the War for the same reason.
