One of the emergency measures applied by the Japanese Government after the earthquake of September, 1924, was the 4 Melbourne dispatch states that the suspension of the Customs duties on goods Federal Cabinet will consider shortly the required for reconstruction up to April question of granting assistance to trade 1st, 1994. The pre- aent condition of une import lumber trade is, perhaps, a good example of how busi- seas bas turnce from goou to batt. After the earthquake, the Reconstruction Board of the Tokyo Government pinced orders for 30,000,000 ft. of lumber in Canada and over 100,000,000 in the United States. Besides this, many of the regular lumber importers speculated nesvity and ordered

SETTING OF CONCRETE.
SPONTANEOUS HEATING.
It is not generally recognised that the setting of cemest is a chemical process, and as such unaided processes usually give rise to beat evolution, a rise of tempera- ture during setting is observed.
Such temperature rises vary according to the nature of the cement. An active cement develops a large amount of heat in a shert time. This is well known in the case of aluminous cements; when shutter-

in the market, but then importers with HONGKONG SHARE MARKET high-priced stock had to keep reducing their price in line with the drop in Casuda Thus niuch lumber bus been sold here in recent months at losses from $10 to $20 per A. As can be imagined, many importers and dehlers holding this high priced stock could not stand the strain, and went under. Only hast week the most important lumber dealers in Usaka, a firm in whom everyone had the utmost confidence-Kawasaki Gomei Kai- shawent into the hands of receivers, when certain of their bills were dishonour ed by the banks. This company turned out to have assets of 1,500,000 yen and liabilities of 3,000,000 yen. of which all but some 300,000 yen was owed to large foreign lumber importers in Japan. The failure of Kawasaki has greatly influenced the lumber trade, especially in Osaka. Bankers now refuse to open letters of credit for lumber, and prices have sagged badly, offers from dealers being richeul- ously low.
Experiences of this kind have been noticed in other lines beside lurther. For instance, there are 100,000 or 200,000 rolls of roofing paper still on hand which cannot be used, and the latest Govern- mont restrictions prevout the use of any thing but freproof felts.
WAREHOUSES BLOCKED.
Take, also, the case of corned beef. Before the earthquake only stall ship- ments were received, but with the dona- tions of corned beef by relief committees and increased purchases the imports' have

Much of the foodstuffs sent to Japan to relieve the masses after the earthquake has found its way to small grocers, and it is possible to-day to buy Australian jams, New Zea Tand corned beef, Canadian salmon and tinned milk, and American canned vege tables cheaper than the wholesaler must pay for new stock.

As might be expected, Japan's trade bas been most unfavourable for the first six months of this year, biports having exceeded exports to the value 660,886,000 yen. Since January last unti June 20th the exports amounted 508,117,000 yen, while parts have aggre gated 1,400,000 yan. Of course, Japan's trade always has tended to be adverse during the brst half of each year, while exports usually exceed imports during the last six months; but this year the excess of imports over exports have been usually great, due for the most part to conilitions as referred to above.
4d. A YEAR INCOME. Desperate and starving, Robert Balajty, a retired actor, for many years u mem- ber of the Burg Theatre in Vienna which corresponds with the Comédie Francaise in Paris, has billed himself. "He was found sitting his arruchair with: a rubber tube in his mouth, having turned on the gas at the other end of the tube.
When he retired al.58, just before the war, he had saved 100,000 crowns, more than £4,000. He invented this, with Gay- erament security, 2 5 per cent. The investiment is all he leaves, for he has pawned and sold, everything else he had to live, and the income from his little "fortune,
