The air was misty at the time and vision was blurred but the unmistakable sounds of rifle-fire were beard by the officers on watch and soon afterwards hullets were seen hitting the water about thirty yards

Approximately thirty shots are believed to have been fired, all falling short.

No passengers were brought to Shang- hai; a fact which was probably not known to the riflemen whose ides might have been to take pot-luck & some of the Kiangsu troops believed to be entering Shanghai in civilian attire.
The offers report that between Woo-, sung and Kiangyiu, spot about 100 miles up-river, quite a number of Chinese 21 Sept, 3 pagunboats are lying at anchor. Between 19th Sept, p.m. these two points, no vessels are allowed to proceed up during the night." though Thursday, 25th Sept, 10am. vessels coming down proceed unmolested.
This is considered due to the fact that Texels"down are from friendly pro- vinces while the opposite opinion prevails concerning vessels from Shanghai. The Sloping Clump is quite near to the Woo sung Forts. Shanghai Mercury.

strain of meeting her husband again after his perilous adventure proved too "great for the woman whose lot had heen long months of anxious waiting, and be fore she reached the topmost step of the ladder she collapsed, and would have fallen had not her husband, roshed for ward just in time to lift her to his side. Tears streamed down both their faces, and for a while neither could speak The secret of this surprise awaiting him had been well kept from Lieut. Doisy, for it was decided some time ago that Madame Doisy: who had bravely horne her part in anxiety during her husband's daring eastward flight, should go to Egypt to meet him and share in the triumphal welcome which awaits him when he reaches France. Lieut. Doisy is not very communicative about his ex-be periences, but he has said sufficient to indicate that he and Bezin shared many perils of which the world has yet to learn the full details. When flying above the forests of Siam, for instance, they felt grave doubts of their ability to resch safe-landing place, for the inter was evaporating from their radiators at a most alarming rate. They had another' trying experience on board the substitute machine which was placed at their dis posal in China. "Bézio had no easy time of it when we were flying 200 miles across the Sea of Japan with out mag- netos simply roasting like pea-nuts. But on the whole it washel promenade."
NAVAL WORLD CRUISE,
XO MARCH THROUGH LONDON.
In the House of Commons last month, Capt. Viscount Curzon, (U-, Battersen, 5.), asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty whether the Admiralty could now state if they had been able to reconsider the question of affording the people of the capital of the Empire an. opportunity to see and welcome back the officers and men of the squadron now engaged on the world cruise upon their "return.
Mr. Ammon (Parliamentary Secretary Secretary "to the Admiralty): His Majesty's Government have reconsidered this matter and have decided to adhere to their previous decision.

FLOATED BY COMPRESSED AIR.
-“The "Gledamoy" was successfully floated at last on the 14th inst. and taken into the Shanghai Dock & Engineering Co.'s International Dock.
The Glenamag went ashore on Video Island last May. She was got off with great difficulty and brought into the Huangpu where she was beached at the New Engineering & Shipbuilding Co.'s works. This firm did the necessary re- pairs which enabled her to be floated by menns of compressed air-the first ship in Shanghai to be floated in this way
I would like to see all our industries in such a state of prosperity that they can manage their own business under the men they employ-Mr. Baldwin.
