THE LONDON SEASON IN RETROSPECT.
ROYAL VISITORS.
Not for ten years has any approach to the social history of the past three months. been seen in London Domestic burdens and international-anxiety have proved powerless to hamper the staging of such a sequence of entertainments largely inspired by the requirements of Imperial hospitality, as regalls and even rivals the happiest times of the two "preceding reigns.

Its eagerness for the part did not restrict itself to the reception of guests from the English-speaking nations. Dur ing the mouth of May, the Sovereigos of Italy and Roumania were successively welcomed, and their respective visits weds the occasion, in each case, of a State dinner, a State ball, a luncheon at the Guildhall, with all the picturesque ritual of City tradition, and a number of other entertainments. The King and Queen, needless to say, were tireless in the graceful performance of their exacting duties as imperial host and hostess, and were only away from Loudon for the short breathing-spaces of their asnal Whitsun holiday with the tyoops of the Aldershot Command, the customary ten days at Windsor Castle For Ascot Races, and a flying visit to Knows ley for the consecration of Liverpool Cathedral. Their Majesties held four Courts and three garden parties, at the last of which, specially earmarked for Canadians anil Americans, they showed their habitual tact in adapting the tradi- tions of Buckingham Palace to the loss Wed forial atmosphere of the White House.
Perhaps the most notable feature of the season was the revival of the formal pre-war dinner-party on a large scale. The King and Queen dined in July with the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, and her Majesty also honoured Viscoun- tes Harcourt. The Duke and Duchess of York were the guests at Hampden House of the Duke and Duchess of Sutherland, and the Queen of Spain was the guest of honour at a dinner-party, followed by a small dance, given by the Spanish Am bassador, and Madame Merry del Val. The French Arbassador and the Comtess: de Saint-Anlaire, Countess Beatty, and Viscountess Astor all gare dinner-parties to meet the Queen of Roumania, ang tite Earl of Granard had a dinner-party for men only at Forbes House in hen2'of the Prince Regeht of Abyssinia.
Dances, needless to say, were as panic- rous as befitted such a "vintage". Beason, and the mother of two popular young foreign Princesses declared at aba affer the Eton and Harrow match, that she had been on duty as escort to her daugh. ters literally for five nights a week since the middle of May.
in June the Queen honoured the Coun- tess of Derby with her presence at the Derby night dinner and dance at Derby House and the Duke and Duchess of York were present at the halls given by the Countess of Ancaster and the Marchio ness of Bath, the latter of which Primer tieorge and Princess Arthur of Con- naught also attend. The month closed with a memorable ball at the Guildball, given by the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress in connection with the British Empire Exhibition.
In July the Prince of Wales and the Queen of Spain honoured the Countess of Pembroke and Montgomery with their presence at her dance at 12, Hyde Park gardens, for Lady Patricia Herbert, and the Duke and Duchess of York attended the balls given by Viscountess Massereene and Ferrard and Mrs. Arthur James.
