THE RUBBER INDUSTRY. REASON FOR IMPROVEMENT

IN PRICE

The price of rubber within the past two or three weeks has risen from about 10d. to 1s. 2d. per lb.

Messrs Sanderson & Co., the well- known London firm of rubber merchants, in a recent report, say:--

The reason for the present improve ment in price, is that it is becoming clearly evident that America wants, to buy rubber, that she cannot go on much louger on her present system of rationing her buying, that every week further proof come to light that shipments From producing countries are lighter than were expected, and that the market generally has been too much influenced by the bad features, we of abich, it must be noted, still exist. Shipments from the Dutch East Indies "dering May were 12.483 tons, against an average of "13,500 tons for the Grst four month, January to April. There is still a continued enin paign against the Stevenson Scheme" in the Straits, but this need not be taken too seriously. The dealing section of the trade naturally desire more rubber to deal with, and a very low price would naturally be in their intereRĖS.

Messrs. Symington and Sinclair note American buyers are showing some in- terest, and have been in the market both in London and in the East. There has also been some Continental trade buying Speculative commitments for July livery have proved to be almost nil, and such as there were have been liquidated without difficulty. The firmer tone of the certain market has brought about a

slight amount of bear covering, and revival of speculative interest. based on the probable effect of the reduction in exportable quota on August 1st is also

GERMAN CHINESE LOANS.

The following letter has been addressed hy the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank to the secretary of the Stock Exchange, London:

We are asked by the Chinese Lega. tion to inform you that so far as the Chinese Government is concerned there is now no distinction between bonds of German issue in those luns which have heen declared effective from time to time since June soth and those which have hitherto been regarded by the Chinese Government, as invalid.

Up to the present no definite instruc tionis as to payment of drawn hands-or roupas in German issue of three railwag Loans have been received."

CHINA'S PRECA:"TIONS.

Mr. Macene Moir, is a letter to the Press, points out that justice is scarcely done to China in the matter of her action respecting the German Chinese bonds, He writes that the facts are as follows:-

the

China suspended payment of certain or Bonds of German issue which she understood and believed were hands of German nationals, but she in- stituted. through my firm, as the London soliciters of the Chinese Legation, a prs. cedure for inquiry into the bong hides of claims by Alfies and neutrals who could establish that the Bonds were not held by enemy nationals for the period during Which China was at war with Germa and in every case where we were satished as to these claims we were instructed to report appropriately to the Chinese for In consequence a very large ernmeal. number of claims have been passed and

China in adopting the principle of the attachment of enemy-held private pro perty was simply following the practice adopted by her European Allies on the onclusion of the war, and it scarcely lies. FUTURE SUPPLY OF RUBBER

HONGKONG BUILDING

The future supply of rubber and the
