WASTE OIL AT SEA. TOLL OF BIRD AND FISH LIFE.
The Duchess of Portland, presiding at a conference of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, at Wembley, recently, said the destruction of sea birds and fish by waste fuel oil was a serious evil and a subject a special importance. I myself have been hundreds of gulls and guille- mots-clinging to the rocks with nothing to eat. I tried to wash the oil off one myself and could not. The most merciful thing was to knock it on the heat. This destruction is not confined to sea ducks, divers, and gulls, and I am concerned to. learn that in November last 200 pink-foot ed geese perished on the south side of the Ilumber from this cause."
Lord Montagu of Beaulieu, moving a resolution deploring the destruction of sca birds by waste oil, welcoming the appoint- meat of a committee of the International Shipping Conference to examine evidenco of the evil, and coinmending the use of oil separators, said great complaints came from all round the coast that the oil was a great nuisance to hathers. The White Star Line had fitted one of their ships with a separator, and in one voyage had paid for the cost of the apparatus by the oil they saved.
Mr. F. D. Holcon, secretary of the British Sea Anglers' Society, seconded in a vigorous speech, in which he denounced the horrible oil as the probable ruin of sea angling, and, he feared. also serious menace to the fish food supplies, which was more important than sport It was heart-breaking to see such large birds as the gannet and the great north- crą diver dying a miserable lingering, painful death. The fish population of uur seas was dwindling rapidly, and unless steps were taken to put a stop to the pollution we were within measurable dis. taner of the extinction of fish life.
the North- Sea
The resolution was carried, and also one to the recommending encouragement establishment of national Nature reserves and, bird sanctuaries throughout the British Empire:
Mention was made of the resolution passed by the British Chambers of Com- merce moved by Col Hobart (Isle of Wight) and seconded by Mr. H. G. Mur doch (Plymouth), directing the attention of the Government to the serious injury to bird and sea life by the discharge of refuse oil
The fund was drawing interest to the amount of £2.500.
Duting the meeting it was mentioned that the original piece of timber on which Nelson died was now held by the British Foreign Sailors' and Soldiers" and Sciety in the East-End, and Sir Doveton sec whether it could be promised to secured.
