Ascot opened on Juis 17th with brilliance comparable to its pre-war glories for despite the threats of ever- lowering clouds during the early part, K. J. Birbeck of the day, the sun shone without inter ruption on a scene of dazzling splendour. The famous meeting is essentially Eng- in its character and in its won- lish, both in its drously beautiful setting and this fact must have impressed itself farcefully on the foreign visitors, whose numbers this occasion, as is easily understandable, made & record.

No more brilliant outdoor picture could be imagined than that which greeted the King And Queen, with the Prince of Wales and other members of the Royal family, as they drove along the course a few minutes past one o'clock. The Royal party had motored from Windsor Castle" to Duke's Drive, Windsor Great Park, where they chanced into seven open fandans. Their entry through the Gold Gates at the far end of the Straight Mile was heralded by a rear of cheering
