The local market has shewn a very firm tone during the past week, resulting in fair turnover. Buyers of nist stocks predominate, and prices Continuo good.

OVERSEAS TRADE: £15,000.009 INCREASE IN VALUK OF IMPORTS.

The Board of Trade returns for May, issued on June 14th, showed that the iniports were a record total, and that there was a record increase over the pre- ceding month. The value was £122,050,590), an increase of 235,021,050 over April, and an advance of £39.890,253 over the priending May. British exports, 21 A total of £70,260,582, show an increase of £1,200,000 over April, but there was a decrease of £1,0,959 when compared with May of last year,

With regard to imports, comparing last month with the previous May, food, drink, and tobacco advanced by £8,176,20, of which fain and flour ac coueted for £4,80,484, and, non dutiable #foou and drink £3,119,728. An increase of £15,171,483 is. shown under the head of raw materials and articles mainly un- manufactured, the outstanding increases

waste. being raw cotton and cotton £4.663,895, and wool, raw and waste, and woollen rugs 10,120,016.

Articles wholly or mainly manufactur- ed rom by £5,731,039, the principal ad- rances being iron and steel £1,848.017, non-ferrous metals £1,004,305, und oils, fate, aid resins manufactured £1.243,786. With respect to exports, again. compar ing the respective months of May, there' was a general increase in food, drink, and tobacco, totalling 39,838. There was a revival in the export of articles wholly or mainly manufactured, these showing a rise of £2,020,185. Only five items showed small decreases, while Afteen advanced, the outstanding feature being an increase of £1,024,177 fa colton yarns and manufactures.

For the first five months of the year the imports totalled £500,040,279,"in creuse of 560,424,257 over the correspond- ing period last year. British exports for the first five months were valued at £326,448,701, an advance of £6.645,006 for the similar period of 1923.

Re-exports during May £1,317,709 to £13,091,195 when compared with the previous May, while, for the Evel months of this year, showed an increas of £11,495,760, with a total of £01,104,818.)

The valves are two cylindrical sleeves with rectangular slots or ports which when they register with each other and the ports in the block allow the ingress and egress of the gases without abstruction These wide open passages, particularly on the exhaust side, permit a more thorough cleaning of the. burat gases from the combustion chamber than any other type of motor, so that every ounce of energy available is". utilized from the explosive mixture, which gives us such tremendous power

The combustion chamber is completely surrounded by water and an alloy piston noted for its great hea radiating qualities in need so neither the combustion chamber nor the head of the piston gets hot enough to baka the restle from the exposed gases to form carbon while there is still enough heat maintained to handle the explosive mixture effectively.

-It is the only type of motor that improves with use.

While carbon can not form in the combustion chamber, still a certain amount of the residue from the burnt gases works up behind the wide sealing ring in the cylinder head" and, as this building in process obtaing, it keep pushing this Healing ring more tightly against the inner sleuve until it completely seals the compression chamber. developing more power with every mile the motor is drawn.

All part in the Willys-Knight car are assembled with wide clearance between each other and oil is forcet into these clearances under heavy pressure so that the entire assembly is lapping or wearing in on thews heavy films of oil instead of wearing out. In other words, every bearing in this motor is n:o bearing instead of a metal to metal bearing which is necessary in the construction of a poppet valve motor in order to keep it quiet with subsequent quick

wear and noise.

It has eliminated one hundred and sixty two quick wearing parta sacsanary in the operation of a cylinder poppet valve motor. There are no hammering parts such as striking against push rods, push rods against Talve stema, or valys heads muspiping back into their seats through the medium of heavy springo, etc.
