SERMON BY THE REỳ. H. COPLEY-

The follixing sermon was preached in St. John's Cathedral on Sunday morning by the Bev. H. Copley Moyle, M.A., Senior Chaplain :--

In human nature there seems to be a tendency to go freni on extreme to its opposite. We are familiar with the ex pression the swing of the pendulum." In polities it counts for much. If one political this party has been long in power is an inclination to give their op ponents a chance of showing what they can "do. In manners and fashions it is the same, the gay and brilliant colours in which men of fashion decked them- Iselves in the reign of Charles I. were a natural reaction from the sombre garb adopted by the Puritans, and I suppose we may say that the "funeral black in which the Englishman arrays himself on festive evasions today, is the inevitable. reaction from a time when men suppassed women in the brilliant colours of their clothes..
The same swing of the Pendulum is to be seen in the cbject matter of sermonsof to-day as compared with some fifty years ago. Then the preacher was wont either to attempt to frightep his hearers from sin by a vivid pietief the punishments in store for the wicke or he would seek to draw them to virtite by an account of the glories of Heaven, that is to say his sermon dwelt chiefly on the future. "Now there has come the natural reaction and most sermons deal chiefly with this prez sent world, and how we are to work and serve in it, anà make hut small and in- frequent allusion to the future.
There
was a time when it was said that Chris- tian people were so taken up with the next world that they had little thought for their duty in this one, but that time has passed, and the question which the

Christians of to-day are considering is OBTAINABLE EVERYWHERE. How they are to wipe out the evils in thes world and set up the Kingsonof God' here and now. The reaction seems to be going too far, and we do well to remind ourselves that though we are put into this world by God in order that we may make it a better world, and serve Him av serving our fellowmen, yet we cannot afford to despise the impetus which the belief in the future life can give us. alfope may help us to victory when the present seerus hard and difficult. That is the. thought which St. Paul gives us in the text" I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed.

The older one gets, and the more one comes ja contact with men and women, the more suffering one finds in the world. Often enough it is not on the surface. and you have to know the sufferer in- timately before you ɓnil out that he is a sufferer at all. An old preacher who had DRLECLERC'S VINAYOZE heen one of the most popular "preachers | in England and Seatland for many years. said at the close of his life that if bei had to live it over again he would "try to jurach autore comforting sermung, for here are always so many people in nice-l of comfort, and there are no better waya of comforting us in our sufferings than by directing our thoughts to the glories

You and 1 in our lives need the stimu las of hope and the Christian religion is fall of hope. The New Testament endea vours by picture and symbol to teach us some thing of the glories of Heaven, but the conditions there are so different Tron. the conditions here that it impossible for as to understand what Heaven is but to have our thought often fixed on Heaven will help us to see our sufferings in their, right proportion.
