The stern Assyrians were very particu- lar about the veiling of women. All mar ried women and their attendants had to appear to public veiled. Priestesses were also veiled if they were married, but otherwise had the head bare.

All slaves and concabines had to go unveiled, and if one was caught in a veil the person who detected the imposture had to take the woman to the palace gates, where he was given her clothes. while she received fifty blows and had Asphalt poured on her bead.

If any one saw her veiled and did not urnounce her he received fifty blows, his arms and clothes
