ENGAGING THE FOREIGN EXPERT.

The Trade Marks Bureau has not yet succeeded in securing, the services of a foreign expert for en oyment in the bureau, says Reuter's beking correspon. dent. It appears that when the Bureau resolved to engage a foreign expert, a telegram was sent to Mr. Lu Cheng Hsiang at Berne asking him to recoma mirnd a suitable man. No stipulation was made regarding nationality, but it was considered essential that the expert should speak English, in view of the wide commercial use of that language in Chinu

WILM

Mr. Lu got into communication with. the International Trade Marks Associa tion in Berne, but was informed by the Chairman that the Association had Mr. La reported no one available. accordingly to the Chinese authorities in Peking. The latter again telegraphed to Mr. Eu stating that the matter urgent and asking, bim to request the Association to nominate a miitable man if it could not apare one of its own people. The Chairman of the Associa on again regretted that he could not allow a member of his stali taky the post. but agreed to do his best to obtain the services of a qualified man elsewhere,

MARKS BEING 'REGISTERED.

the

Since the establishment of the Chinese Trade Marks Office, 548 trade marks have been registered by Chinese firms, and 348 by Japanese. The Germans come third as they have about 60 marks regis tered. Owing to the competition of the Nahyang Brothers Tabaero Company, British and the America Tobacco Corpora tion has registered no less than five to bacco marks with the Government odice, in spite of the opposition of the Chan- hers of Commerce of Britain and America. The Chinese authorities are endeavour- ing their utmost to secure the services of. an experienced European trade mark man as foreign adviser to the office, and u is Tseng-hsiang, Minister to Switzerland, interested in the selection of a suitable English-speaking expert from Sweden er any other European country. In this con- nection. it is interesting to note that the Ministry of Justice has just sent an offi cial to Mukden with a view to prevent- ing General Chang Tso-lin carrying into cffect his scheme on the establishment of a separate Ta-l-yaan, or Supreme Court, for Manchuria as this step, if it be actu ally put into force, will seriously affect the legal system of the Republie and it will further hinder foreign firms from registering their trade marks with the Government Office.

THE STRAITS RUBBER INDUSTRY. The Secretary of Agriculture, Straits Settlements and F.M.S., in his report for 102 says:-The average price of rubber for the year under review was 51.2 cents La pound. The corresponding figure for 1929 was 8.8 cents a pound (two months restriction.) The year 1923 was a year of recuperation. The increasing demand the for motor vehicles, especially in United States of America, the Sehidro "witz and other recent inventions, the growing popularity of rubber soles and the improving political situation Europa girs reason for hoping that the indastry will and a level for steady pre- perity under normal conditions.

The Day of the Knight is Here !

IT IS THE

WILLYS KNIGHT

Simplest and most trouble-free type of motor ever invented.

It has the most distnctive and gracefully balanced body of any car

in the market.

~The Willys-Knight car is the four cylinder motored car that makes the six

unnecessary.

The Knight motor is steam principle. The valves are two cylindrical sleeves with rectangular slots or ports "which when they register with each other sad the ports in the block allow the ingress and egrem of the gases without obstraction. These wide open passages, particularly on the exhaust side, permit a more thorough cleaning of the burat gases from the combustion chamber than any other type of motor, so that every ounce of energy available is utilized from the cxplosive mixtaro, which gives us such tremendous power

2-It has no valve to "grind and no carbon to clean

The combustion chamber is completely surrounded by water and an alloy pistan, noted for its great hea radiating qualities is aned so neither the combustion chamber nor the head of the piston gets hot enough to bake the resides from the exposed gasen to form carbon while there is still enough heat maintained to handle the explosive mixture affectively.

-It is the only type of motor that improves with "use."

While carbon can not form in the combustion chamber, still a certain amount of the residus from the burnt gases work up behind the wide sealing ring in the cylinder head and, as this building in process obtains, it keepe pashing this sealing ring more tightly against the inner sleeve until it completely seals the compression chamber developing more power with every mile the motor is drawn.

4-It is the only type of motor that wears in while other wears out.

.

All parts in the Willys Knight car are asembled with wide clearance between each other and oil is forced into these clearances under heavy pressure so that the entire assembly is lapping or wearing in on these heary films of oil instead of wearing out. In other words, every bearing in this motor is an oil bearing instead of a metal to metal bearing which is necessary in the construction of a poppet valve motor in order to keep it quiet with subsequent quick.

wear and noise,

..

It has eliminated one hundred and maty two quick wearing parts necessary in the operation of a cylindered poppet, valve motor. There are no hammering parts such as cama striking against push rods, paah male against. valve stems, or valve heads mapping back into their seats through the medium of heavy springs, etc,
