Brussels last month celebrated the tercentenary of the foundation of New York. We may suspect, says The Times, that few people in England and not quite everyone in America knew that Belgium had any maternal interest in the matter. Famous names commemorate the hitch pioneers of city and State, famous stories make us all familiar with the Dutch colouring in the old Ute of New York. But what has Belgium to do with the place In 1624 Belgium was the Spanish Netherlands, and her great port of Antwerp was paralysed by the power of the Butch Republic, and Belgian activity in colonisation or any other ven tare overseas was not conspicuoms. Yet it is perfectly true that when Cornelius Jacobsen Mey sailed from Holland in the spring of 1024 with the first bold settlers who were to colonise the land about the Hudson river, most of the thirty families on his ship were Walloons.
